Are their shows and channels available online? Like Hulu Plus at $8 a month?

Some network shows are available for viewing on ABC/NBC/CBS for a few days after they air, unless that has changed.

Replace the network cable and wriggle it.

"I don’t know about that. They do have “wifi hot spot” devices using a cellular network. Hopefully they have a good data plan but it will work."

The kind of service that I'm talking about will install an antenna at a customer's residence--an antenna that will communicate with a provider's relay antenna on a tower (line of sight) up to about 10 miles away and farther with a small dish behind the antenna.

I don't know what kind of bandwidth they top out at, but some on the Rockies will get residential connections up to about 15 Mbps. They start at about $40 per month for about 5 Mbps, but wireless Internet providers in some cities probably do it for less than that. Not a bad deal with phone included for $10 or thereabouts.

I was having a lot of problems with Verizon DSL. Kept losing the connection after a storm. They kept trying to blame ME for the problem. Turns out the box up on the telephone pole on the corner would fill up with water and short out whenever it rained. They finally fixed it!

Doesn’t sound too bad. I like my faster internet though.

Just say bye-bye to AT&T. They suck and always will. If you have the option where you live, go with a cable connection. You’ll never look back.

Have indeed had the water problem with the ATT connection. Still using the same one without replacement—ground was saturated with water. Do lose connections with some regularity. Am using a MAXA cookie manager to restrain the connection disruptions—tuning with cookies makes a difference. Any automatic updates are turned off. Free spyware software helps some too. NVG510 modem.

Sorry to hear this. The issues seem to be bizarrely untraceable: do you have any equipment in your home that could be interfering? Medical hardware, a different kind of heating/AC system from your neighbors?

Dslan is wonky.
Had similar issue with Frontier.
But they finally slew the beast, and our net speed improved after.

Four nights ago I posted to say that my Internet connection seemed about to die. It did. Despite the fact that I had changed modems and plugged it directly into the phone jack (bypassing both the filter and the surge protector) my Internet connection went from erratic to dead. And I expected that to be the end.

Before turning in for the night I noticed my Internet light had again turned green, but that didn't seem to indicate very much, since it had been going from red to green and back again with alarming frequency. However, for some reason, before going to bed I decided to put my computer on stand by rather than simply turning it off. The last ATT tech to visit the house had called back and advised me to keep the modem on even when I wasn't using the computer so he could monitor its performance. So when I called it a day the light was green again, but when I woke up the next morning, sure enough, the Internet light had turned red again.

Out of pure habit and a sense of desperation I booted my computer up and a funny thing happened. After coming off standby the Internet light turned from red back to green. Again, this didn't mean much. But as I continued to fool around on my computer I noticed that it wasn't turning red, and the connection speed seemed to be completely back to normal, as it had been the previous seven years. I didn't expect this to last long and continued to put the computer on stand-by when I wasn't using it, and every time it went to stand by the Internet light turned red. Then on coming to life it would turn green. For whatever reason the Net was turning off on stand by and turning back on when I re-activated the computer, and it was behaving much better as well.

I decided to take a chance and turn the computer off altogether, after leaving it on for over 24 hours. When I turned it back on, the Internet light was green again. I took another chance and replugged my modem back through the surge protector and the filter, and neither one interfered with the connection.

What I'm saying is that just as swiftly as my Internet connection went wonky and died, it came back and started working again. And I have no explanation, just as I never had an explanation for the trouble to begin with.

I've wracked my mind trying to come up with a reason. It's tempting to say it's the fact that I'm using another modem, but this is the same modem that was on it when the connection died completely, so I can't believe that's the reason. It may be that there were technicians working on the network somewhere and they finally repaired it. It may be that after a month of rain saturation the ground and equipment had dried sufficiently.

Maybe it was "just one of those things."

At any rate, right now my Internet connection appears to be working as good as ever. And while some of you may choose to join the computer and line technicians and say the whole thing was just in my mind, I can assure you that this is not the case.

Despite a little slow-down last night, I seem to be fully back now. The thing is, I have no idea how long this will last. My problems might never show up again, or they could suddenly reappear in another month, in another week, or later today.

I wish these things made sense. But the simple fact is that they don't.

I want to thank all of you for the advice and encouragement and apologize if I was short with any of you. It's been a difficult year altogether and these technical difficulties came at a particularly bad time. I will reply to a few of you that, yes, there are filters on the phones and on the DSL line. Similarly, as to the advice to get cable, I wish I could. Cable is not available where I live now. It was in my previous home, and that's how I received my television, but even there I used ATT DSL for the Internet and it worked fine.

I don't know what more to say. The past couple months have been like being under a curse. I just hope it's lifted now.

Thank you all again.
