Another World Cup, another England flop – so who's to blame in 2014?
The familiar search for scapegoats and answers is set to begin.

Wayne Rooney offers a heartfelt apology to fans Maybe we’re too honest, I feel, as a team. In terms of Uruguay the other night, they stopped the game, they committed I don’t know how many fouls

Harry Redknapp says he dealt with players at Tottenham who tried to avoid England duty.
"When full internationals came around, two or three players didn't want to go and play for England," Redknapp said.

"They'd come to me 10 days before the game and say: 'Gaffer, get me out of the game. I don't want to play in it.'"

England don't have a prayer of winning World Cup 2022, says Harry Redknapp
"Are we going to win the World Cup in Doha? Good luck. Not a prayer. Get in the real world," he told BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday.

Portugal is the better Team, PERIOD. But the better Team doesn’t always win. Having said that I would be very happy to get a tie out of this one.

At the World Cup level these guys are elite athletes. Too suggest otherwise is ignorant.

I remember that episode. And I heartily concur.

How can you stop a player who can do it all?

How about the Tanya Harding approach?

I know. The US has struggled in soccer because football, basketball and baseball draws so many elite athletes.

I don't enjoy soccer, I don't enjoy baseball, but I appreciate the high level of skill. Watching a soccer pro give a 'skills demo' is simply amazing.

People still are not giving Costa Rica full respect. Can one imagine if it had been England who had defeated Italy and Uruguay, people would call England a dark horse to win the World Cup. Or even with the USA's single win over Ghana, expectations are going through the roof.

5 additional Costa Rican players drug tested after game.

Exactly, in fact our 2002 World Cup was a successful campaign for the modern era. We beat Mexico IN the round of 16 and played well in the Quarterfinals. In fact, per the endless blame game that goes around, one could say the Germans denied the USA a goal with a handball.

Momentum really seems to be with the Americans, I see it hard to see the USA losing this match.

The most uber-lib/PC media morons are sports talking heads (e.g., Costas, Olbermann). They fake their enthusiasm for soccer to prove their bona fides as “citizens of the world.” Blecch...

There was doping suspicions around a Costa Rican in MLS a few months ago. He was taking strange trips to Costa Rica to rehab an injury.

Sorry, but the reality is running and kicking a ball is a low level skill that even toddlers accomplish.

PS: It remains really boring.

The first time soccer (or, as it was called then, “socker”) was seriously put forward as an American trend was in 1905, when President Teddy Roosevelt strayed quite far from his Rough Rider roots by asserting people needn’t die playing American football.

Imagine that.

USA actually has a long history in playing soccer; the early colonists played soccer, USA was actually a SEMIFINALIST in the FIRST WORLD CUP in 1930.

Despite people often bringing up English and other countries' hooliganism, there were soccer riots in America decades ago.

USA played our first match as team USA back in 1885 vs. Canada, our first real sanctioned match against Sweden in 1916.

I agree it is boring, as is golf and baseball.

But soccer is not low skill. You are speaking from a position of ignorance of the game. If it is low skill, go to a 'Rec' soccer game and see if you can stop a player from scoring on you.

By your definition, EVERY running back in the NFL is lower than low skill - they just run.

Sorry, but in 2014 soccer continues to be boring with only a small, fringe audience in US.

Referencing Roosevelt is quite pathetic to support such a boring sport. Dude, that was almost 100 years ago.

I do admit soccer hooligans and drunks keep it on the same level as “professional” wrestling.

The women’s USA team has been very popular for years, now the men’s team’s popularity has really picked up.

The Olympics, that’s been global for years, so I certainly don’t buy that the media is trying to get us going global. The World Cup has existed for years, just like the Olympics, countries may join in the competition or they can choose not to.

Ethnic groups from Europe comprised a lot of the soccer that was played in the USA decades ago, hence the US Open Cup has been won by teams that often refer to ethnic groups, Hungarians, Yugoslavians and so on.

Answers for this are rather drawn out but all the data supports it.

USA avenged the two losses to Ghana in the last two World Cups, I hope come the 3rd game, we defeat the Germans too as they defeated us in 2002.
