John was not wrong. Jesus was never wrong. He was talking about the seed of Abraham that other passages show went through Isaac to Jacob. It did not pass to Ishmael or Esau. Why is it important ? The Islamic religion traces their line through Ishmael. They hold Abraham to be prophet, Ishmael his son to be a prophet, and Mohammed the descendant of Ishmael to be "the Prophet." Details, details.

Just insist on the correct lineage; Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when one wants to designate a Jew

The Jews use all sorts of terms for themselves to describe a certain aspect of their lives. It's interchangeable from my understanding. Jacob was far from perfect, he was cunning and a trickster, like all of us, and when a Jew wants to associate himself with that, he might refer to himself as a Child of Jacob or some such. Jesus is called The Son of Adam, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah- He is a Child of Abraham, of John, of David, of God-- it all depends on the context.
