What is the best advice you've ever received?

Posted on 05/24/2014 9:32:56 PM PDT by MNDude

Maybe it was some wise warning your dad once gave you, or maybe it was something useful your coach told you that still guides you today, but what would you consider that best advice you've ever received?

From Dad:

“If only you realized life is hard, how easy it would be for you!” and “Never stick your hand into someplace you can’t see.”

From Mom:

“Always vacuum under the sofa cushions before a party because someone always loses an earring.”

From a cross-stitch pattern:

Count that day lost
When low descending sun
Reveals from thy hand
No worthy action done.

Have received lots of great advice but this is the one that springs to mind -

from Mick Jagger - "You can't always get what you want, but you get what you need."
Actually great advice about denying self and seeking God's will in your life.

(After kicking me in the butt) "Never handle a weapon without checking to see if it's loaded."

"learn to laugh at yourself - if you have trouble with that, I'll laugh at you until you learn."

"Grow up and suck it in - don't be a crybaby."

And for the licentious, "Ooh...right there...don't stop..."

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Man is wise not to anger woman,. he has to sleep sometime and with both eyes closed.

What ever you do today you will have to sleep with tonight. Sometimes changed to: You will have to look at yourself in the mirror tomorrow when you shave.

Life isn’t fair. (Unlike the nonsense liberals spew about equal everything-justice to counter the reality that “life isn’t fair.”)

Yes. That is a good one. "Don't put off for tomorrow, what you can do today."

Inexactly quoted from Nelson Algren:

Never eat at a place called Mom’s.
Never play cards with a man called Doc.
Never sleep with a woman whose problems are worse than your own.

Dave Ramsey from Financial Peace- everything that dude says.

A very long time ago - before Dave Ramsey came onto the financial scene, a good friend told me once: "Just because you can afford something, it doesn't mean you should."

Best advice I've ever received.

I credit that advice for being able to retire in three years at the age of 54. There's much to be said for living below one's means, saving money, investing wisely, tithing to one's church and living a simple lifestyle.

Measure twice, cut once.
A Frenchman said your advisory statement. I cut de board tree time an it is still too short. It always sounded better in a French accent.

One of my first employers taught me to PLAN AHEAD. He meant when you are done with one task be ready to go onto the next one. For example, do not wait for your battery to be charging on your cordlesss drill to finish a job.

At our office we have kept a list of sayings by various employees. We call it the book.

My favorite is:
Don’t bark up a tree that won’t let you climb it.

Second favorite:
Don’t beat a dead Bush.

My grandfather told me this when I was about 12 or 13 and I followed it. We celebrated our 50th in September.

I'm not sure which is more remarkable... that you married your grandfather, or that he survived to have his 50th anniversary after marrying as a grandfather. ;)

Learned in summer Bible camp: “When in doubt, don’t do it.” Seems to work most of the time.
