After taking a 90 mph fastball to the face during a Friday game, Houston Astros prospect Delino DeShields Jr. showed off his injuries online this weekend — and they’re not pretty.
The minor league center fielder was struck by the ball on the right side of his face during a game in Frisco, Texas. Miraculously he managed to walk off the field after sustaining the blow.

A 30 mph baseball hitting the face will do significant harm, but a 90 mph throw strikes with 9 times the force. That’s probably about as hard as I’ve ever thrown one.
one of our local golf pros coaches little league...was pitching to a batter in an indoor facility...took a liner, off the kids bat....LOST the eye!!!!!!

Ray Chapman was killed by a baseball in 1920. I think he was the only major leaguer to ever be killed in baseball.

The fastest baseball I EVER threw was 79 MPH. My arm hurt from my shoulder to the tips of my fingers for 3 days.
The fastest pitcher I have ever seen was a kid who I think dropped out of school in the 8th grade. We were warming up before a pasture ball game.
I don’t think this kid had ever played organized baseball but he threw so hard that it actually scared me. To put that in perspective, I played on a high school team with a guy who later became the number one pitcher for the University of Florida and he was no where near as fast.
I still wonder what a pro team could have done with him.
That’s why baseball players don’t break out the chest pounding and fruity celebration dances after mundane plays. It’s bad enough that it happens by accident, no need to tempt anyone to really try to do it to you on account of your moonwalking down to first after drawing a walk or making a choke sign to the pitcher after getting a single.

Cards manager Mike Matheny took one in the face and never going down. Stops, spits out the blood and starts for first. It is a bit graphic.
