Students Call on Washington and Lee to Apologize for Lee

Black students at Washington and Lee University have demanded that the board of trustees denounce one of the two namesakes of the Virginia school, Confederate general Robert E. Lee, or face acts of civil disobedience.

The students are calling for the school to apologize for Lee’s “racist and dishonorable conduct,” remove Confederate flags from the chapel, and ban Confederate reenactors from the campus on Lee-Jackson Day (a state holiday), according to the Washington Post. General Lee, who served as the school’s president after the Civil War, is buried on the school grounds beneath the campus chapel.

The tension stemmed from disappointment by black students over the school’s lack of diversity, the Post reports. University president Kenneth Ruscio responded to the students’ demands by saying he’s created a “special task force” to look into the school’s past and “to study the history of African Americans at the school.”

“While we are aware of some of that history, I believe we should have a thorough, candid examination,” he said.

They aren't educated enough to know which man was President of the United States, owned slaves and did nothing to abolish slavery during his presidency. This is likely just another way to turn attention away from their own failures and it seems another weak, spineless college President will facilitate their actions. Having said that, W&L has some very wealthy benefactors. Will they become involved? I hope so.

BTW, its not an apology they want but eventually a Lee cleansing of the University likely to even include moving his body out of the chapel. Nothing is beyond modern racist radicals.

That's why they are students! Not masters... not judges...

On the other hand, their tuition is unconscionably high. Maybe acting out is their payback. It certainly doesn't appear to be knowledge.

How many of these “students” actually pay for their education?

1) These so-called “students” should be expelled and prosecuted for making terrorist threats.

2) If they follow through on any of their terrorist threats, they should be arrested, jailed, and prosecuted for any and all crimes against people and property that they commit.

Regardless of how they're doing it, they're spending $50,000 a year to attend the 47th ranked law school in the country. They can't be that bright.

Apologies, preferences, reparations. Nothing will ever be enough. There will always be another notch on the ratchet.

Look at Zimbabwe. Well past the total destruction of that country, they're still lashing out at the former ruling class.

(Actually don't bother looking at Zimbabwe. Just watch as we become Zimbabwe.)

When they applied to W&L, they thought the ‘Washington’ was Denzel Washington and the ‘Lee’ was Spike Lee!

When is Yale University going to apologize for its corrupt and oppressive colonialist namesake Elihu Yale?

Here’s their list of “demands” (more like whines):

Here is a list of the FOUR DEMANDS:

“1. We demand that the University fully recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus.

2. We demand that the University stop allowing neo-confederates to march on campus with confederate flags on Lee-Jackson Day.

3. We demand that the University immediately remove all confederate flags from its property and premises, including those flags located within Lee Chapel.

4. We demand that the University issue an official apology for the University’s participation in chattel slavery, including a denunciation of General Robert E. Lee’s participation in slavery.

If the school does not act by SEPTEMBER 1, 2014 we WILL engage in civil disobedience.”

Would’ve saved a lot of time, ink and paper if they’d just been honest and said “We demand more whites be made to kiss our @$$e$.”

After Lincoln was murdered, Lee was one of a handful of Americans that quickly defeated the proponents of revenge-based trials and endless guerrilla warfare.

Read the recently published book “April, 1865” if you want the facts, “students” of Washington and Lee, IF you want the facts.

I don't see where this is the law school - I would assume it's the undergrad school, unless I missed something.

I actually enrolled at the law school in 1998 and moved out to Lexington. LOVED it out there. I had to withdraw and transfer to the University of Minnesota law school because of family emergencies... always wondered how life's path may have been different had I been able to stay out there. W&L was ranked ~20 when I was there. I see US News has it at 43 now... I wonder what led to the significant decline.
