I should have been clearer in my statement. And again, I am not trying to be a smartass or ‘target or mock you personally...
You may well be at your peak. What I meant was are you the best of the best at what you do? Are you in the top 100?
The top bands HAVE to be or they are gone quickly. Even among that top 100, most are on top a year or three, then gone. MAYBE the top to have a decade or two. MAYBE the top 5 have legend status and can claim hits in 3-4 decades.
To pull that off is miraculous considering the environment it happens in. Whereas a software engineer has a more solid’ platform to work with (a couple Operating systems with highly defined needs) or a Doctor who does apendectamies (or any as much as it can be...’routine’ surgery), a band has nothing but chaos and uncertainty from day 1. there is no solid foundation to music. tastes, trends, tech, equipment all change rapidly.
I know what I want to say but can’t seem to articulate it. But hopefully it will make some sense ;)
As an amateur musician I get what you’re saying and agree 1000%! My comments were more directed towards some earlier comments about the stones still playing concerts when they are over the hill etc. I could really get on a soapbox about music as a business as I have been partially involved and thinking about this all my life since the Beatles came out.
It’s like pro baseball. Very very few people really make it. Many think they have sort of made it because they play shows and have a few albums. An incredible number of working bands get basically minimum wage. There is no money in playing music and one has to be willing to travel and live on the road all year to get that
In recent years it has gotten worse as some venues want bands to almost play for free since there are so many bands out there. Supply overwhelms demand. Supply has risen dramatically since people can self-produce. In this “look at me” world everyone thinks they are a star and want to get on a stage. this makes people think they are somebody when in fact they are just another mediocre band. not that much creativity that I can find. I see very little that was not already done in the 70s and 80s. Just recycled cross-pollination of music forms. Too much inbreeding and thus most current alternative bands all sound alike.
That just reinforces my attitude about them, love the guys, hate the music.
