'Captain America' sets box office record as it leaps past 'Noah'

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier," the sequel to Marvel's 2011 film about the Red, White and Blue super hero, smashed its way to $96.2 million in weekend ticket sales, setting a new record for an April release and speeding past last week's winner, "Noah."

The film, which stars Chris Evans as a scrawny World War Two reject given super powers from an experimental serum, easily exceeded the April take for the racing movie "Fast Five," which collected $86.2 million in ticket sales in April 2011.

"Noah," starring Russell Crowe as the biblical figure, was second with $17 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday, and has collected $72.3 million in overall domestic sales since opening last week, according to studio estimates. It's total worldwide take is about $180 Million.

The dystopian action film "Divergent" was third with $13 million, for a total of $114 million since its March 21 release in U.S. and Canadian theaters.

Well I WAS at the premier midnight showing of the original Batman at Showcase Cinemas in Dedham, MA that somehow set off 300+ AA’s to the point that the Staties and SWAT had to be called in.
THAT was a crazy night.
The original Superman movie was the stage for my very first date back in ‘78.
I guess that crap flick was ok.

I must admit I was never into comics and really don’t get the superhero thing.
Stan Lee also comes across as a jerk as far as i’m concerned.

I guess I just don’t get it.

Disney owns Marvel the publishing company and Marvel Studio the movie company. Marvel Studio started owning them all, but Marvel was in very bad financial shape as a whole so they licensed out stuff to get money. Luckily they licensed wisely, made a lot of money from the movies and increased readership, and got to see how to make a good superhero movie. So while Marvel owns the characters they don’t own the movie rights to many of them, though they are in the process of getting them back as much as they can.

i'm not saying you are wrong or wrong not to like them, just that some of them are more watchable than others(think having to take kids to the movies etc) especially if the message is a positive one... 8^)

I guess it just goes to show that people prefer a fantasy that makes them feel good, not one about eco rage.

For those who have never seen the city, here is a bit of it.

Good! I hope “Noah” tanks from here on out.

I am looking forward to Captain America. We will take our boys with us for a family “date”. :^)

Not everyone lost money on it. I made out very well on supplying all the logs for the arks. They were the stars of the show.

Pray America wakes up

It cost $125 million to make. So far it has grossed worldwide
$175 million. If I can count right, that’s $50,000,000 profit. Nice little take for 10 days work.

Don’t rely on the “public” budget. The director has acknowledged there were reshoots, re-edits, and a new marketing campaign. The real budget was 170 million.

This film needs to do $350 million to get into the black. Since a lot of its receipts are coming from overseas, where (in some territories) the studio realizes only a 15% percent return per ticket sold, that’s hard to achieve.

Unless there’s some wild upturn in the film’s returns this coming week (unlikely), Noah goes into the red ink column.
