Passing gas 101: What your flatulence patterns mean for your health

Passing gas: Everybody does it – and no one wants to admit it.

This embarrassing habit may seem foul, but breaking wind is simply an unavoidable byproduct of our daily digestion. In fact, the average individual can pass gas anywhere from 13 to 21 times a day.

But your gaseous patterns can actually speak volumes about your health, especially in regards to your eating habits, and they may even serve as an indication of larger digestive health issues.

“People who produce excessive amounts of gas and particularly foul smelling gas – if you’re eating a super high fiber diet, that could be part of it,” Dr. Anish Sheth, a gastroenterologist in Princeton, N.J., told FoxNews.com. “But if it’s something that’s persistent, and your significant other is noticing it, it could be a problem.”

Nothing like passing gas to generate laughter.

The two ideas are not necessarily contradictory. It is likely vegetarians produce more gas and meat-eaters produce more potent gas.

My copy on line reads in the seventh paragraph, last sentence reads:
"According to Sheth, many red meats and protein contain high amounts of sulfur – so while herbivores may pass gas more often, flatus from meat eaters may smell much worse."

Beans... beans... the musical fruit

The more you eat, the more you toot!

The more you toot, the better you feel,

So lets have beans for every meal!

A guy I used to work with was in the grocery store with his wife. They were at the check-out and he ripped a loud one. He looked at his wife and said out loud “just look at me, they'll think I did it...”. True story. No, they aren't still married.

I’ve been known to let fly some that would peel paint.

A few years ago, my younger son, then 6 years old, was sitting at the dinner table and blew out a rather large fart. I looked at him and said “What do you say?”. Without a second’s hesitation, he replied, “That was a good one!”.

I tried to hold back...I really did...but after about 3 seconds I looked at my wife, sitting across from the table, and saw that she too was turning bright red from attempting to hold in the laugh. We both busted up laughing for about 5 minutes...as did everyone else...after which we did correct him on the PROPER response to passing gas.

I know what you’re saying—beans, whole grains, cruciform vegetables. Better than being constipated, I suppose. I think your body builds up a tolerance as far as the gas is concerned. But this tolerance doesn’t seem to last long. Go a few weeks or months without beans and you have to start all over again. You can see the appeal of the high protein, bacon-and-egg type diets.

My mother tought me to soak them before cooking, then discard the soaking water. Helps some.

You must not have cats. Felines and wicker don’t mix.

Speaking of cats and flatulence, my Maggie is 16 and seems to like to cuddle with her butt near my face at those times of tumultuous digestion
