The number of police officers wearing video cameras will triple with the City Councils approval on Tuesday of the purchase of 400 additional devices, according to an update from Staff writer Deanna Boyd.
The purchase will equip 600 officers with Taser Internationals Axon flex cameras, making the police department the largest user of the Axon cameras in the country.
The advantages are multiple, said Police Chief Jeff Halstead. For first-level patrol officers that are young in their careers this ensures that their decisions and their activities were fair and within policy.
"Without it, it is literally sometimes just their word against what were hearing from either the call, the suspect or the witnesses."

I think that this is perfect. Protects both innocent citizens and the good cops.
“And this button here makes it ‘malfunction’”
Everyone should have one.
And if you have a video camera in your car that’s taping THEM when they pull you over, will they arrest you?
If it’s OK for them to videotape US, it should be OK for us to videotape THEM.
“Everyone should have one”.
The way things are going everyone needs one. The system that our corrupt political hacks have created where average citizens are the evil ones, while politicians, bureaucrats and cops have become the judges needs drastically revised.
American citizens didn’t cause 9-11. Instead incompetent bureaucrats, politicians and illegal immigrants did. The NSA needs to spy on them, not us.
All US Senators and Congress critters should be required to wear one of these 24/7.

what would be perfect is every citizen having this and filming their encounters with all govt agents.
That would give a whole new meaning to colonoscope.
without it cops are considered truthful over citizens every time by the courts.
Yep. You got it. They will be very helpful indeed when supporting the policeman’s side of a story, and very obviously “Made in China” when detrimental to it.
If the video uploads immediately and directly to a secure site AND the cops can’t turn them off, this is a good idea. *If*.
Rest assured it will not be used to protect and serve your best interests.
Better get used to giving only the bare minimum info to the police and letting your lawyer do the talking if you are charged with a law violation. Know your rights.
There are several good YouTube videos that can explain what to say and do in these situations.

Well I feel so much safer now as there is no danger of the tapes being lost, camera malfunctions, videos being doctored or cameras not turned on by mistake.
Yea that will work until the cops are in trouble during something illegal then we can hear the excuses.
Everyone should use them.

It can be so much better than that, if they take advantage of the capabilities of the camera. Going back and replaying even benign encounters can make a huge difference in professional development. There is nothing like hearing a recording of your own voice to make you want to sound better next time.
From what I hear the older cops don't like them because they can't turn them off.
