I was out earlier tonight and heard Mick Jagger over a store loudspeaker singing "Under My Thumb." Given the very tragic suicide of his lover of 13 years, fashion designer and stylist L'Wren Scott, who was buried earlier this week amid rumors that Mick's unfaithfulness was one contributory factor, I hope he never, ever performs that song again...

What people (particularly feminists) don’t understand is that these songs are often very good art. Great art does not encourage violence, it explores it. Male anger and jealousy at faithless women is a timeless theme and should be studied and taken seriously. And then, of course, these songs ROCK.
I still think Sting’s song is haunting, scary and wonderful. I just read that people are so dumb they misread it and have it sung at their weddings!
Having known “stars” over the years, I’m sure Mick is coping quite nicely. They are narcissists par excellence.
That said, he has written some amazing songs. I always advise people to ignore the artists and concentrate on their work.
He’s a narcissistic star and it’s worked out for him perfectly! It might not be your idea of happiness and it certainly ain’t mine, but to expect Mick to get that ole time religion while still chasing the broads is, to me, a worthless waste of time. Plus, people expect him to be a horndog and that helps bring in the dollars to support his polygamous life style.
When I was a kid I was disappointed that Julie Andrews, who played a nun in a movie, was really a divorced actress with a potty mouth. Then I grew up.

Look, I have no problem with viewing things as art. I enjoyed Frank Sinatra's music, for instance. Mick will do whatever he wants. I posted about how it felt to me, a member of the general public, to hear those lyrics again just last night, knowing what we now know.
I first saw Mick live when he was 21 and again close enough to touch him when he was 25, and enjoyed the Stones' music. It's always been about good time memories. I think many men and women took his bad-boy antics as par for the 60s course. Certainly I did, more or less along the same lines of Camille Paglia, whom you mentioned. That's why it surprised me so much when I felt appalled by the lyrics last night.
And approximately $7 million in debt. Money isn't the point. That it doesn't buy happiness is more the point.
I saw The Stones in New Orleans in 1981, and they opened with this song.
When you think about the actual plot of “The Sound of Music” it is all a little bent. I mean the barley legal fallen virginal nun hooks up with a semi retired salty sea captain who is involved with an attractive older wealthy mature lady trying to save the captain from embarrassment. Dude, you don’t do the help; she’s your nanny not your “who’s your daddy”. Perverted story line.

I do feel sorry for the young people who derive most of their life lessons from pop culture, but that's not people on FR, for the most part. No wonder UK and US have squandered Western Civ, however.
Except that it was based on a true story; and the real family escaped, came to America when it was still a free country, opened a bed-and-breakfast in New England and continued to give singing performances there.
