Why Are Zombie Shows Suddenly So Popular, What am I Missing?
March 29 2014 | lee martell

I don't have a tv of my own, but I see enough and hear enough to know that for some reason, Zombies are a hot sell on American tv right now. See the popularity of shows such as The Walking Dead. In fact, I heard there is even a new perfume for women coming to the market this spring, based on this show. The Walking Dead Perfume. Really? I'm not necessarily bothered by it, to each his own, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what has brought us to this level of fascination. I have read many, many of Dean Koontz books over the last ten years. I kept reading them, until he spent too much time trying to humanize the Antagonist by giving him/her a 'cool' sense of humor. I like my monsters scary and predominately unappealing, but there are always exceptions.

I tried off and on for years to appreciate Steven King, especially back in the 90's when he was cranking the books out like Wheat Linguine, but a rarely stayed with any of his work till completion. Most of Steven King's books read to me, like a never ending monologue, or as my junior high english teacher; Sister Richardene would say, a run-on sentence; something I still fall into today if not careful. I sampled some Anne Rice books. I never completed any of her stories because I was lost into the minutiae of character analysis, and I have never made the link between love and blood, at least not in the ritualistic manner of Rice. I see cable once in a while, I see the commercials about upcoming programs featuring Cannibalism, The Apocalypse, Tomorrow's Dystopia, Body Parts being ripped off and used as clubs. Is it that the Zombies has become today's most acceptable villian because most people share an energetic fear of the unknown? Is that it? To me, if you;ve seen one Hollywood Zombie with the strawberry jelly for blood and all the neat, symetrically placed spots of gangrene, you've seen them all. Am I wrong?

No real mystery. Killing people is bad. Wasting zombies is fun and morally acceptable.

One factor is that PC heavily limits who can be “the bad guy” and still be at all believable. The undead are still fair game.

Zombies feed on brains. They will starve in Washington D.C.

I honestly don’t get it. I’ve enjoyed fantasy and horror and gaming for decades, almost my entire life. Zombies were always the gratuitous ‘trash mob’ threat to adventures, easily dispatched, and usually the matrix for some more interesting threat.

Yeah, but real people aren't the same as RPG adventurers. There's no Wizard hurling fireballs and incinerating 20 zombies at a time, Clerics instantly curing all wounds and zombie disease infections, or Fighters cleaving half-a-dozen zombies in half with their +5 Vorpal greatsword. RPG's are fun, but don't exactly represent reality all that well (I.E. Get high enough level with enough hit points and you can hurl yourself off a building and walk away as if it were nothing where in real life that same fall would've splattered you all over the pavement).

I never watch TV, so perhaps I shouldn’t talk.

But although I have been a fantasy and science fiction fan for most of my life, I find zombie stories a dead bore. I can’t imagine watching that kind of junk.

Postmodern perversity, I suppose. Even if the zombie apocalypse is coming, who the hell wants to get involved with it until it’s forced on them?

I didn’t think I’d like Walking Dead, but the acting and the plot situations makes for a very entertaining drama. I don’t much care for the gore, but I suppose that is just standard for the genre.

What does TWD indicate? Unless the topic is political or societal, I’m usually out of the loop.

It's a metaphor for a new type of enemy. Beasts who walk on two legs, but are not subject to human reason, have no idea of mercy, no fear of punishment, and are only interested in killing all who are not like them.

An enemy which cannot be reasoned with, with whom no peace treaties can be made. An enemy who gives you no choice but to have to destroy every single one of them in order for you and your loved ones to be safe.

“TWD honors the zombie persona by actually affirming that they are not diseased/infected humans (World War Z, 28 days later etc)”

I thought earlier in the series, when they stopped by the CDC in Atlanta, the scientist there said it was something in the brain that reanimated them. To my mind, “logical” zombies are impossible because the systems that keep the body “functioning” are shut down. Zombies are supernatural, they have to be.

Art imitating life is what they call it, I think...

Lots of unredeemed ‘walking dead’ everywhere you go..

Sadly, this nation is a center for pumping it out throughout the world....

Have you heard about the new game coming out this year called Dying Light?
Looks pretty sweet.

Read “World War Z”. (Book, _not_ movie by same name.)
Brought the zombie genre to a whole new & respectable level.

Agreed.
Listen to the audiobooks in this order: "The Zombie Survival Guide," and "World War Z."
Awesome entertainment!

Just finished watching Dolls, a classic from the 1980s, when movies were scary and fun at the same time.

TWD is more about human interaction and survival and what people have to do in order to survive than it is about zombies. It’s about the balance between individual responsibility and self reliance, and the risks associated with relying on others for your survival. It’s about not being able to eat if you can’t contribute.

My husband is sitting here watching walking dead taped shows. He was in military then DOD..He says rabies gone wild = zombies. There is actually a zombie preparedness page at the CDC website haha.

http://www.cdc.gov/phpr/zombies.htm

It's like any of the apocalyptic, the end of the world fascinations. I prefer the real biblical end times. I can't watch the Gordy part.

While my husband watches walking dead, I pretend the zombies are democrats. They walk around brain dead looking to eat off of others. You have to keep your kids away or they might get infected by them. You have to go for the head to kill them. That's democrats problem too.

My husband bought me a zombie killer form home defense. It's actually a 320 pump shotgun. It looks scary enough to make someone run.

Spengler had a column about this, where he links it to the secularization of the culture leaving key questions unaddressed.

Once the rapture happens and God’s Holy Spirit is removed, people will revert to their natural unsaved evil state...

Sad reality, but true...
