Kidding aside, I have to resolve the upcoming xp dilemma as well, two pcs with xp home. I have looked @ several Linux distros and am experimenting with Mint Xfce running persistence on a flash drive. Works good overall, except for special programming reqd on terminal. Cannot. get it to support one of my printers, no tax return software,slowww boot (flash?).
Will stay with xp on wife‘s pc, using sandboxie, returnil, vm sofrware. I believe MS security chicken little is overstated. If I encounter a crash & burn, I will get a refurbished Win 7. Win 8 is OUT! Btw, my android tablet works just fine, you know that Appleasshats don‘t want us glbal warming deniers investing in or with them. Sandraflukem.
I don’t know about Win8, but on Win8.1 you can choose to boot-up to the “Tile” start page or the classic Desktop.
I use a Surface Pro Tablet PC....love Windows 8.1 for touch and desktop use.
Maybe I can educate some of you about business:
Microsoft (and most everyone else) knows that tablets, smartphones and other devices are the future.
Microsoft also knows how reluctant people are to learn new things (just read any thread about Windows 8/8.1)
So, Microsoft is trying to converge the user experience of your smartphone, PC, tablet, Xbox, etc. into something similar and familiar.
That is long-term thinking that neither Apple nor Google have.

The Linux guys thought of it 3 years before Microsoft, and encountered the same type of resistance.
In other words, Microsoft copied other computer innovators but didn’t bother to learn from the mistakes the innovators made.
I’m a solid Windows guy myself, loved XP, now love Windows 7, but Win8 was a bridge too far. Too bad you have to chuck the Metro GUI to get any decent value with the OS.
Yeah, but with Classic Shell you get a classic start menu and classic Explorer, things I am used to.
Maybe I can educate some of you about Microsoft: Sales of their mobile platforms are lagging, so they thought goofing up the non-mobile gui would help.
But it’s really not a problem with Classic Shell, and the underlying OS is excellent.
Actually, you need educating....again....
Microsoft's mobile platform is selling very well outside the United States.
The world of technology does not revolve around this nation alone.
