Windows 8.1, after four months of its October 2013 debut, has finally managed to overtake other operating software including Windows Vista and Mac OS X recording a slow, but steady initial growth.
According to latest latest data coming from Net Applications Windows 8.1 holds a market share of 4.30 percent to become the fourth most popular operating system in the world.
According to the statistics, Windows 7 with a share of 47.31 percent, continues to be the number one OS version followed by Windows XP which is still powering 29.53 percent of desktop computers worldwide.
Microsoft’s modern operating system, Windows 8, launched in October 2012, powers around 6.38 percent of computers. Next is the Mac OS X 10.9 and Windows Vista with 4.30 and 3.48 percent share respectively.
Although Windows 8.1 has not been able to attract a huge of users and is running at a relatively slow pace, Microsoft still believes that more and more users would opt for the operating system in the near future.
At the end of 2013, Windows 8.1 garnered a market share of 3.60 percent, while in January 2014 the new OS version’s market share went up to 3.94 percent before eventually going all the way up to 4.30 percent in February 2014.
Windows 8.1 is set to receive an important update this spring as the OS maker aims to make several changes to the platform in order to make it more appropriate for PCs.
One thing that may overshadow Windows 8.1′s market share increase is Windows XP’s stability at above 29 percent share. With just a little over month to go before Microsoft officially pulls the plug on Windows XP, there is a lot at stake for those who don’t migrate away from the 14-year old operating system.
In before the Microsoft vendors/salesmen find this thread and show up and tell us how Windows 8 is really great, it’s just we are too stupid to realize how great it and Bill Gates really are!!

Operate two 8.1s, one 7.0, and two XPs. Have not found ONE feature that causes me even the slightest desire to get rid of the XPs.
Personally, I can't wait. No more stupid gold shield alerts. I would just assume MS ignore me. They've gotten my last dollar.
Yet I will continue to use XP...just not for intenet access. That will be disconnected in favor of a Linux VM.
I had to get a new computer and it came with Win 8. I honestly have had no problem with it. It took some getting used to, but it’s worked fine for me. No, I am NOT a shill for Microsoft. I would have preferred to keep my Win 7, but this will do.

I can say I have both operating systems in the house.
Yeah, sometimes I miss "Bush2000" also. Sometimes.
I have had only one issue with 8.0 so far and that was after installing openvpn. It jacked the registry so I could not delete or modify nic devices correctly, something like that. I did an inplace reinstall and have been fine ever since. I do wish they could quite putting the banner on my screen to update to 8.1 though. If I can download the media I might do it, but I don’t want to get involved with their store.
I had to upgrade to 8.1 after my XP desktip died hard after many years of daily service.
Opened the case and the heat sink on the cpu was almost as big as a power supply itself.
For about $350 bought an ASUS T100 small tablet/laptop w/Windows 8.1 plugged in a monitor and keyboard in a docking arrangement and am impressed with the little bugger. Now I am mobile and can work from a McDonald’s but also can work on the desktop.
This is my second attempt to post with Vista.
My laptop hard drive went out a few months ago and when I went to replace it I couldn’t read the stupid verification code! My desktop is a home build with XP installed.
So I needed a new OS for both and from what I can gather, I would have to buy TWO licenses to upgrade both computers.
Well, I decided to try Ubuntu 13.10. It’s far more user friendly then I thought it would be and it allows me to do everything I need to do on a computer! Did I mention it was free?
I refuse to buy two licenses for my two home computers at a cost of $220+ dollars. To heck with Windows. They want to regulate and price themselves out of business....fine with me.
I’m no MSFT salesman, but from what I read above, four of the top five OS’s are Microsoft. Or five of the top six, if you consider 8 and 8.1 distinct.
Also, it looks like OSX edges out Microsoft’s big turkey Vista by only a teeny percentage — but their market share is approximately equal.
Facts are facts. That probably hurts a little if you’re an Apple fanboi. Especially the Vista thing.
I’m very happy with 7 on both my laptop and desktop.I’ll be skipping 8 just as I skipped Vista and ME.

I recently installed a 2012 server and thought I was going to need a microscope to read that license code. I was about ready to shift to an ubuntu option right then and there.
The only reason I have windows running at home (other than it came with the PCs) is because Linux sucks at the games I like to play.
Either that or they don’t even offer the games for Linux.
When that changes so will I. :)

MS XP works. Apparently a big mistake for Microsoft.
It doesn’t crash. It doesn’t need support.
XP works.
My “Win7” laptop was dying and purchased a gorgeous ASUS Ultrabook with Win8 with brushed aluminum chassis and Gorilla Glass cover. I immediately upgraded to 8.1 so no experience with Win8.
That said...
My ASUS 8.1 boots to desktop almost instantaneously - blazingly fast. In comparison, my old “Win7” laptop was on a slow boat to China. Painfully slow vs my new 8.1.

Obviously beat by the Linux/OSX/XP4life trolls to relay their rehearsed cliches about how no one uses Windows8, or how it cant be used without a touch screen, or some sort of other nonsense.
