Why is ChristianMingle.com advertising on CNN? (a confession...)

Okay. This is just one of those things that irks me. You know that car people (dealers, etc.) see through car situations "financing, dealer incentives, etc.) kinda like The Matrix.

The same is true for engineers scientists, etc.

Well, my business is advertising. I am exceptionally good at it and have made many many millionaires in my time selling other people's stuff.

A big part of what I do is deciding whom to reach, when, and how.

Numbers don't always tell the tale - in fact they rarely do. Common sense and a touch of plain old insightful thinking is a core attribute.

About 100 steps down from "insightful" we might find "room temperature," and it really doesn't take a media buyer whose brain is at room temperature to determine that CNN, which is already overpriced, might not be an optimal medium to reach self-identifying "Christians."

In fact it's obvious, to me, that the buy is a move on the client.

A "move" is an insult. A Birdie. An "F.U."

I'd bet you dollars to doughnuts this is a VERY expensive buy, they railroaded the Christian Mingle Marketing Director into it by lying about CNN's numbers and demo/psychographics, and furthermore, if this is not the case,

that there is a nepotistic (or otherwise) relationship between the CNN rep and the buyer for or Marketing Director for ChristianMingle.com

OR... This is a burn. A "Christian" company is being burned by a Madison Avenue boy with lots of gel in his hair and a big party at The Cock tonight. (It's the name of a bar.)

Doubt me if you will, but though I am not yet 40 I have been around this business for over two decades, and I've seen this happen time and time again.

It’s probly cheaper to advertise on channels that nobody watches.

Doesn’t “Christian Mingle” also run a separate service for poop-pusher to hook up and mingle? Or am I thinking of one of those other “Christian” dating services from TV?

Maybe it’s to raise awareness enough that some militant gay will file suit because there are no LGBT categories and thereby generate tons of free advertising?

It is NEVER cheaper to buy overpriced and mis-targeted - and ANY network buyer would know that. Name a “Christian” that is a core CNN viewer and I’ll show you a CNN broadcast engineer with two bottles of hand sanitizer in his pocket for when he has to shake Little Miss Vanderbilt’s hand.

Perhaps it was a package deal for all Spark Networks sites? Still does not seem like a good choice. http://www.spark.net/our-portfolio/portfolio-overview/

I have to agree. Considering how ulta-low the ratings are, I bet CNN has significantly dropped it’s advertising rates to the point that this website can afford it.

Why write to us? Why not write or call the owners of ChristianMingle?

1) It is called being free to run your business the way you want instead of having someone dictate to you their own rules.

2) There are millions of Christians in the US who probably watch CNN willingly or are subjected to it at airports and office buildings every day.

3) Why do you even care how Christian Mingle spends their own money?

Could they be doing “niche” marketing to you as a consumer? Here’s how that would work: via data mining, they have determined that you click on a lot of Christian sites. Therefore, when your ISP address clicks on CNN or any other site that uses in-depth cybermarketing, you get Christian ads; but another computer user who clicks on lots of sports sites would get sports ads from CNN.

I too have to agree with you.... and for even more reasons than you pointed out.

Look just under the logo at the very top of their website. They very boldly quote a Bible verse: “Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. -Psalm 37:4”

There is a very unbiblical heresy unfortunately showing itself often and boldly in Many so-called Christian churches today, called “Prosperity Gospel.” Prosperity Gospel takes this verse out of context and skews it’s meaning. You may have heard of the popular film/book (promoted by Oprah) making the rounds called “The Secret” which purported that The secret to making more money, losing weight, falling in love, landing your dream job, etc. is to follow the advise in this film/book. It talks of a “new Era” locked away for centuries, but now available to all and teaches learn to ask for what you want and, if you believe it, you will receive it. The premise of this is that we all have a divine essence within us, and we just need to get in touch with it.

Thia is the pantheistic belief that God is in all of creation and we too can become a god. Does this remind you of someone?.... Lucifer was banished from heaven for this belief.

Good Point! No Christian group should ever advertise there.

I think you’re right on all counts here. But I can’t help but think of all those airports, hospital and other waiting rooms, bars during nonfootball hours, etc., where CNN seems to be the ONLY network offered. And boredom in those venues may elicit more active commercial viewing. ?

If you’re going to a bar that shows CNN during non-football hours, you need to change, really....

CNN is in place to deliver ideology, not profits.
Its size compared to the cable company owner (29bil revenue) is trivial.

I thought this was a very thought provoking and interesting discussion. If golux also wrote to the website, great; but I am glad I was CC’d to get this thoughtful consideration. This is insightful analysis, IMHO.

And that entity should not be sending spam emails to me as they do. I have no interest in that type of mingle, thank you. Delete, delete, delete!
