Word For The Day, Monday, 1/13/14

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

diminution; noun

1. the act, fact, or process of diminishing; lessening; reduction. 2. Music. the repetition or imitation of a subject or theme in notes of shorter duration than those first used.

Etymology: 1275–1325; Middle English diminucion < Anglo-French diminuciun < Latin dīminūtiōn- (stem of dīminūtiō ), for dēminūtiōn- (stem of dēminūtiō ) (by influence of dīmunuere; see diminish), equivalent to dēminūt ( us ) (past participle of dēminuere, equivalent to dē- de- + minuere to lessen) + -iōn- -ion

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

No picking on Dave.

Since Schimmel died, Dave is one of the four funniest people. Lmao

Though JPOD did make an actual audible chuckle joke about cancer...but...then again...he’s brilliant

i don’t know, it seems to me gym rats would be more likely to be catty than trail runners.

Exactly. They are busy comparing wardrobes and personal trainers, like the tennis chicks.

Thanks. Mom frustrates me.

We were told that her hearing aids were broken. They’re not — just needed new batteries. Lamp needed new bulb. I wish we could find her cell phone! It has disappeared. Not that she makes phone calls, but she likes it because it shows her the date and the time.

So, it’s off to the cell phone store this AM. I don’t think that it is stolen because I get the bills and nobody is using it. I think that it got thrown out with the trash.

Have you noticed that the three best teams in the ACC currently are Pitt, SU and ND? probs not sitting well with the denizens of Tobacco Road to have the former Big East dominating their league. LOL. and there is Gtown, in all of it’s irrelevance, playing the likes of Butler and other no-names.

Plus, I would never complain about this type of definition that doesn’t tell you anything cause it uses the root word.

Cause it’s the type of facetious definition I might give. Usually good for 3 points out of 5 on a test.

Caring for an elderly relative requires a lot of patience. But just like the readings from Feast of the Holy Family said: He stores up riches who reveres his mother.

I’m surprised your hubby didn’t plan your trip to Syracuse for this weekend, so you could watch Pitt and SU play.

it uses the root word along with several others -lessening, reduction. i think that the definition is entirely adequate here.

I think he's more interested in the Duke game, as is xsboy. Pitt is an old opponent, i think they are interested in taking on the supposed titans of the ACC. We are counting down the remaining trips to upstate NY: xsboy's senior night for hockey Val weekend, xsboy's graduation on Mothers day, and xsniece's wedding on 6/14. That should do us. Well i did mention that we would prob have to go up for his brother-in-laws funeral and i got horrified looks as he's in his 60s and in excellent health. But that truly would be the last trip.

who am i kidding? he will want to go up for games, i have no doubt.

i am the anti-pedant, but the criticism of this definition is unwarranted! no way you can’t get the meaning from what is written there!

Here I am, back from an estimate-and I know I won’t get the job-the customer is saying do it on the cheap, but already asking about change orders-red flag. I told her the policy on such things-namely that 1/2 must be paid for right then, and her interest waned considerably, but desperate times call for afterthought upgrades being paid for.

I’m delighted that Robert Gates
Says he is without contrition
For being truthful about Obama
And his disdainful diminution

Of our military, and how to run
A war of the real-world type
Instead of a make-believe one
That is just a bunch of hype

Encouraging more homosexuals,
And all that other, trendy stuff
Won’t help if a real war starts
And the going gets truly tough...
