Here's a nice Belgium made Mauser, 1952 with claw mount scope and engraving......

Sorry but this is a shameless plug for a rifle I would like to sell if anyone is willing to negotiate a price.........

Thanks – the one I’m looking at is chambered in .308 so I might go with it.

Heard some recommendations for other caliber’s but it may be a blessing in disguise that the one I’m eying is just that.

Less of a decision to make.

You have multiple independent decisions: caliber (.308win was my choice and seems to be one of the top choices, but there are others, and availability matters) the stock (wood is prettier, which matters in good times, while synthetic is lighter and more durable, which matters all the time but perhaps matters less than looks), barrel length (I got a 24 for accuracy at long range, but that’s heavy; 20-22 inch is lighter, and 16-18 inches is much lighter), trigger (accu-trigger or comparable is well worth the money), and of course the manufacturer (Rem/Savage/Ruger/Mosin-Nagant/other).

Price follows from the other decisions, and a cheaper rifle means you can afford more ammo, but perhaps that you’ll like it less. Scope matters at least as much as the rifle, and can cost as much. Big decision, but you came to one of the best sites in the world for answers.

I was in a gun shop when a guy comes in with a Sears rifle in 30-06. He wanted $150 for it. I looked at it quickly and sure enough, it was an FN Mauser with the JC Higgins name.

I knew the owner of the shop and when he didn’t show any interest, I asked him if I could buy it. He told me to go ahead and I did. The action was beautiful but the stock was plain. It was walnut tho.

It had the typical smooth function and was fairly accurate too. I wish I still had it.

20” barrel is to short for real long range.

But hey I don’t know nothing about shooting.

Which Savage do you have?

I’m seriously considering a Savage 12BVSS.

Also, what would be a decent scope for that rifle? I can’t afford a Nighforce right now.

I had a 243, lost it in a poker game, and I disagree. Drop at 300 yards is not for novices.

The Savage AccuTrgger is hard to beat. I have one in .22LR but want to add larger calibers.

As somebody who has shot bench-rest for over 20 years and has about 12 year's of banging steel out to 1200 yards, I'm amazed and disappointed at some of these response. Find a good 700 and put some good glass on it and you'll be fine. while the 308 is not my favorite caliber it will do you fine. As far as those talking about the 700 triggers, well all I can say is if you don't know what your doing don't touch it. the reports on the Remington triggers was bullchit and a result of people messing with something they shouldn’t have. Remington has not changed their trigger but the did put a proprietary epoxy in the adjustment screws and that seemed to solve their problems.

They’ve been one of the best selling rifles for YEARS. Must be doing something right.

My dad purchased this Mauser when he was an officer in the Army, stationed in Germany back in the early '50s. From what I recall, he took it to an engraver in Austria who did the engraving and installed the claw mount scope receiver......(I suspect that the engraving was done by a famed German named Dad was discharged before the customization was completed and the Austrian gunsmith had to send the rifle to my dad here in Detroit.

There was a similar rifle with not the intricate ingraving as this one that sold on Cabela's auction site for $2,800.........I took mine to a local gun dealer and he said it was worth about $1,500 but that I would probably get less if sold.

I then posted it on a gun site, where I was able to copy these photos, and some knucklehead professing to be an "expert" said it was only worth about $700 because the customization took away from the actual original firearm.......LOL!

I’m shooting a blue printed 700 in 300 Winchester Magnum with 208 grain A-Max and will ring steel at 1000 yards with consitinsy. 24 inch Shneider barrel with a 1-10 twist. I’m having a 1-9 Broughton barrel being built as we speak, fixing to move to a heavier bullet.

It depends on the shooter and the brand of rifle/scope to a large extent and it very much depends on the ammo you are using. I have an Armalite AR10T in .308. It is sub MOA with good ammo. I think it’s very capable of 1,000 meter shots. I don’t know that I am. maybe on a day with no wind. I have seen a Bushmaster 5.56 mm with a target barrel, match trigger, and exceptionally high quality reloads shoot hole for hole at 100 yards all day long. A quality semi-auto .308 is perfectly capable of that too.

Here in Florida there are few places where you can take a long shot. Sure wish I had the skill to shoot like that though.

A 30.06 will take down anything in the lower 48 states. I have been told anything in Alaska also. Whatever caliber you use shot placement is essential.

Yes without ammo, a rifle is a very expensive club, or a safe queen.

I agree, reloading is a good plan, if the only ammo available is 600 miles away, brass is going to be hard to come up with.
