Until Ruger makes one, I’d go with the Marlin Liberty Training Rifle in .22. http://appleseedinfo.org/ltr-marlin.html

while suffering the same tragedy as weps4ret, I had three out of ten and consider the list flawed and way too "historical" in nature. I would also argue that the $5K limit applies per gun not in total.

MY (wish) list would look like this:

1. M1 Garand
2. Kimber or Sig 1911 in 45acp. Alternate: Sig P227 45acp.
3. Ruger 10/22 (.22LR)
4. Ruger Super Single Six .22/.22WMR w/ sp cylinder
5. Sig Sauer MK25 9mm
6. Benelli M4 12
7. Any reputable brand bolt action rifle in .30-06. Why the .30-06? It has so many different loads that are available everywhere. You can light load it with a .17 caliber sabot and take small game or heavy load it up past 220gr for large, even dangerous game.
8. S&W XVR 460 magnum (also fires 45LC, 454 Casull and 460.
9. Winchester M94 in .30-30
10. AR15 5.56mm

I'll go with 6 of 10. Of the other four — Smith & Wesson Model 629, Colt Python 6” barrel, Remington 870, Remington 700 — I recommend these instead.

S&W model 10 or 15 in .38 Special replaces the Model 629. Reason: More practical than a .44 Mag.

Colt Trooper Mk III (8 inch barrel) replaces the Colt Python (6 inch barrel). Reason: The Trooper Mk III is as good as the Python, fires the same ammo (.357 Mag or .38 Special), and is a tack driver with the long barrel.

Winchester 1300 Defender replaces Remington 870. Reason: The 870 ejector is a piece of spring steel riveted in place to the inner wall of the receiver and breakage means a trip to Remington to replace it with a new one. (I've had two ejectors in two different 870s break.)

Savage Model 10FP or 110FP replaces Remington 700. Reason: The Savage is a tack driver right out of the box, its MSRP is below the Remington 700, it comes in both short and long actions like the 700, it comes in a left handed action like the 700, and you don't need a special tool to replace the extractor like you do with the 700.

I'd like to amend my #1 choice to a M1A .308 instead of the Garand.

Bump bump bump for post 40—— still irritated at myself for not getting a Python when they were in production.

I of course have no guns at all, but I'd have something a bit different on the list if it were my fantasy list. First would be a personal defense weapon in the SMG category - lots of firpower and useful in enclosed spaces an HK MP5-K would be great, but unfortunately too pricey since the 1986 full auto ban. Next, an AK is extremely dependable and would be someplace on my list, but the muzzle climb on auto makes it almost useless. M-16 doesn't have nearly the problem, but isn't as robust as the AK (I'd like it anyway) One of each please.

Next would be something that is capable of defeating the armor of an apc or a MRAP. There really isn't much available in these lines. You can't get RPGs in the USA, .50 cal might work for a recycled M-113, but short of buying an EXPENSIVE Anzio Iron Works 20mm and then machining your own tungsten FSDS rounds with your own custom made sabots and hand loading I'm not sure if there are any options here.

Next would be something that could remove a whole string of home invaders getting ready to break down your door. Again, there are things that do this, but their availability is virtually nonexistant to ordinary citizens.

As far as the handguns go, Colt Python is nice, but I thought they stopped making these years ago. I used to have one, but sadly I lost mine overboard while fishing offshore in the gulf stream.

A nice accurate bolt action in 30-06, .308 or (for those of us who are rich) .338 Lapua Magnum with a high power scope for knocking off those pesky groundhogs at 400 - 700 yards.

A thermal imaging scope that could be eaily switched among firarms without losing zero would be good too for those occasions when you want to shoot rats in the barn at night.

Something that is capable of handling group targets would be good too.

Just some thoughts.

You can build this collection without hewing strictly to the brands and models listed here, and probably save a few $$ while you’re at it.

1. M1 Garand (There are no substitutes)
2. Colt Peacemaker (or a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt)
3. Smith & Wesson Model 629 (or a Ruger Redhawk/Super Redhawk)
4. Colt Model 1911 (or Kimber)
5. Colt Python 6” barrel (or a Ruger GP100)
6. Remington 870 (or a Mossberg 500/590)
7. Remington 700 (lots of bolt-action rifle choices out there)
8. Glock 17 (lots of polymer pistols out there)
9. Colt AR-15 (this guy is hung up on Colts - lots of AR variants out there)
10. AK-47 (a lever action 30-30 has about the same ballistics)

4/10, after I take the liberty of substituting my ballsy .45 ACP Glock 21 for the wimpy, mousy 9mm Glock 17.

Not that anyone really cares, but here's my list:

1) Ruger 10/22
2) bolt-action .22LR as a backup to the 10/22
3) M1903 Springfield
4) AR-15
5) AK variant
6) M-1A
7) M1911
8) Glock .45 or at least .40
9) .357 revolver, and
10) Mossberg 500 with multiple barrels of varying lengths (20" and 28" at least)

This would be my wish list in a SHTF situation. I've not included the Ruger LC9 (loaded with 147-grain HP Speer Gold Dot ammo, to make up for the mousiness of the 9mm) for concealed carry purposes during "normal" times.

Just my $.02.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

I’ve never understood the following the Garand has.

Heavy. Cumbersome. Clip fed. I do understand the nostalgia.

I do like the version made by Springfield armory. M1-A? .308 instead of 30-06 and magazine fed. Not too pricey, yet, for what it is. Still heavy tho.

Oh well maybe one of these days.

Don’t forget NVG’s! If Obama gets his way, he *will* use them against the American people.

It’s the one that I most regret selling...well that and the S&W 1006 in 10mm.

no class 3 style weapons

That takes all of the fun out of it.

I have owned four of them (boating accident).

Where is the .22LR?

5.56mm

You can’t acquire even three of the most expensive of them for $5K. I think he meant that no individual gun in the list could cost more than $5K.

You can’t touch a good-condition Garand now for under about $900 to $1K. A really nice Garand will set you back closer to $2K.

A 6” Python in good shape will cost you at least $1700 or so. A good condition, smokeless-proofed Peacemaker will cost you at least $1500.

Gotta say tho, this is a very low-brow list. I’d change out the Rem700 for a Winchester Model 70. I’d get rid of the 870 and replace it with a Winchester Model 12. Any man that can read and write his own name has no use for an AK-47, a gun made for illiterate conscripts who can’t tell which way is ‘up.’ Replace that with a FAL, M1A/M14 or G93.

I’d also change out the S&W 629 for something a bit more useful in everyday life, like a 686.

Lemme get my Blue Book...

95%+ shows as $1100. I think that’s low from what I’m seeing in the market these days.

For a fan of revolvers, there is no higher or better example, IMO, of a double-action revolver than the Python. The fit, finish and attention to detail were very well done, especially in the ‘55 to ‘69 period. Early 70’s weren’t bad, but the last round of them in the 90’s... how disappointing.

Keep it oiled up and in a dry place. It’s like having money in a CD that actually pays interest.

I just got a surprise by cracking open the Blue Book for Ray downthread.

You should see how much Pythons in e-nickel are going for now, especially the satin nickel finishes.

It is advisable for the nickel, 3” and some of the custom shop stainless steel Pythons to insist on a factory letter of authenticity (ie, Colt saying “this serial number on this Python indeed shows that it left that factory as a nickel-plated revolver” or “with a 3 inch barrel”).

Management here is going to have a cow when I finally find the Python I want. But here’s the thing: While guns are a (relatively) low-liquidity market at full value, they always have substantial value and they go up in value. Always buy quality. Your regret should inform you: the next time you see a high-quality arm, if you have the money, buy it. Tuck it away, all oiled up. Even if you never shoot it, high-quality guns go up in value rather consistently.

Is there an upper end to convert the Glock 21 to shoot the .460 Rowland? I know there is one for a conversion to .50 G. I.

Why would someone want a semiautomatic handgun versus a revolver? What are the pros of the revolver? I wanted to but a .40 caliber Taurus revolver but was told that Taurus makes their weapons out of inferior alloys.

Definitely agree, I won’t bore u with the crazy details of the day I got my CCL (the instructor had been Married 9X and had a roomful of Medical professionals at his mercy and I am shocked how easy it is to get a CCL) at the end of a long day we went to an unlit makeshift range and had to hit 8 out of 10 at two distances. To save time I used a physician friends 22R and had no problem, what a great weapon.
