"[Obama] was walking into a huge, huge challenge. Like a lot of people who read and care and follow, I can't say that I agree with every decision, but I feel his leadership has been sound, I feel like the administration has worked in constructive ways and continues to," Howard said. "I certainly have no reservations of my having supported him."
Howard said governing is hard for anyone when politicians go to partisan extremes, as the country saw with the recent federal government shutdown. The director said he champions a "militant middle" where people can come together and compromise their ideals.
Looking ahead, Howard said he sees himself supporting former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016 if she does decide to throw her hat into the ring.
"I'm inclined to believe in her as much as ever. She's had all the additional experience of being Secretary of State," Howard said.
