"If we continue down the misguided path that the government is taking us, then the future does not look good," says Free Market Institute's Ben Powell.
Reason's Nick Gillespie caught up with Powell to discuss the theme of this year's Freedom Fest, "Are We Rome?" and whether America is following in Rome's footsteps towards decline.
"Our economic freedom has been plummeting the last ten years," Powell says, "and this isn't a product of Obama. It's Bush [and] Obama consistently. More than half of our decline in economic freedoms happened under Bush. It's just the rate of decline is happening more under Obama."

At the given link there’s a 5 or 6 minute video interview with Powell comparing and contrasting the Roman Empire with our current state of affairs.

This should be interesting. No one has ever thought to compare the USA to the Roman Empire before...

The US will never agin be what it was just 20 years ago.
As a nation matures it’s government grows larger and more oppressive with each new round of mgrs buying votes.
We need to reset.

I suspect we are transitioning from Republic to overt Empire. It’s just that when Rome mad that transition it was not under a closet Parthian emperor.

An Empire with a ruined economy cannot be long sustained. Powell claims the elite plundered and taxed their way to ruin, and that the citizenry were never prosperous, and ultimately could not support further expansion having taken all the booty(heh) available and drained the taxed enough already homies causing their collapse.
But he ends on an optimistic note saying this is not our destiny if we choose another one. Clawing back from resets are arduous and painful; as for me, I prefer a renaissance.

there are many similarities as well as differences.
The fall of the Rome started when the Republic was replaced with the Empire. The Republic was never abolished. Think about it.

The SECOND Roman Emperor was Tiberius--a monster!
The THIRD was Caligula!
The FIFTH was Nero!
Americans who allow this to happen are not merely fools; they are monsters themselves!

” No one has ever thought to compare the USA to the Roman Empire before...”
I’ve heard the US compared to the demise of Rome for over 50 years.
The only difference is that we have allowed ourselves to be destroyed by welfare in 200 years where it took Rome 800!!!
Government leaches and welfare cases that vote outnumber us by so many now that there is no chance of recovery!

Quite true. However, since the empire lasted four centuries after Nero, these guys are unlikely to have been the cause of its collapse.
Also, the reputation of Tiberius as a monster may be overstated. Roman historians lied with astonishing freedom about people they disliked. They just made stuff up, some of it admittedly very entertaining.
