Free Republic | 9/6/2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 09/06/2013 11:58:59 AM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

We could do that, if we grew any of those things. :) We do have “compost piles” for branches, grass, and weeds, but the leaves simply stay where they fall on most of our property, since it is heavily wooded. The leaves that fall on the grass are blown into the woods when my husband runs the tractor/mower over them. What I really regret is throwing out lobster, clam and oyster shells. We do try to plan ahead and save some to throw them in the holes that we dig when we plant trees and bushes.

Our next-door neighbors breed Mastiffs, and they kept coming into our yard to munch on the lobster shells.

Problems problems problems all day long. Glad we don’t have to worry about bears, cougars or mastiffs here.

It’s wonderful living out here in the woods, but a bit more exciting than we had expected.

During my rest periods from planting today, I downloaded info. on the intricate workings of each compound in fertilizer so I would know the chemistry.

“LOL! You should see our garage. I have the same problem!”

Don’t have a garage - those boxes are in this room stacked on top of each other.

I am aware of how attractive plants from seeds look on the seed companies websites. I try to remember what kind of work it will take to get the seeds or plants in containers and question if I can do it before I order the seeds or plants.

The strawberry plants just about did me in because they sent twice the amount I thought I ordered - I must have ordered 50 instead of 25. Damn, I was filling containers and planting forever. My better sense thought I got 25 so my eyes were too big I guess for that order.

We grew strawberry plants for probably 6 to 10 years at our old house. We had a corner lot, with most of our yard raised above the street. We planted probably 10 or 15 strawberry plants there to help keep the sides from eroding. They spread, and were a wonderful treat each season.

50 would be backbreaking to plant.

“50 would be backbreaking to plant.”

These are Chandler annuals that produce extremely well in the south. They are a bush rather than a vine so they don’t send tendrils/other plants across the ground. The ones you had don’t do well here at all. The Chandlers are planted now through fall and take off making strawberries in early spring.

If these actually have strawberries in the spring, I’m keeping some seeds that are on the outside of the berry to see if I can plant them toward fall of that year and see if they grow.

We just take the critters out about 10 or 15 miles and dump them in the forest on our land out north of town.

I have taken one possum about eleven miles from town..He was back in a week and two days. Another one I took twenty plus miles..About three weeks later, he shows up back here, looking scarred up, beaten up..so, I kinda gave him a free pass, figuring he'd succumb to his wounds..

Nope, he didn't. He was here that year, then didn't see him for two years figured he'd croaked..Then I saw him last fall.

He is giant sized now, but still has lines with no fur. Scars all over his back. I guess I should've called him Scarface, but I call him Ricky..He is trap smart now..Walks right by it, even if it has strawberries, and peanut butter & tart cherry sandwiches..

Is it a large berry? Ours weren’t terribly big.

Hubby takes care of planting the strawberries thank goodness. If not for him they would never get planted.

You have devil critters. LOL

That's the truth..Imagine going into the bathroom, thinking you are going to take a relaxing soak, all of a sudden it sounds like Linda Blair (in the Exorcist) is under your tub..screeching, growling, body slams..then you realize, that rickey the Scarface possum is under there having his way with the stupid possum that lives by the shower pipes in the wall between the bathroom, and my bedroom.

Since I don't want a possum breaking through the sheetrock some night, and jumping on my head. I have one of those big old antique wooden headboards..

I was working in Colorado Springs in ‘04 and a lady in the office said that she woke up that morning to 5 bears under her deck. She lived up in the mountains over the city. In all my 3 months of running every which way around the area, I never saw a bear, but did see 4 elk walking down a street very causally just a few blocks from the main downtown area. Not something this southern boy ever expected.

San Antonio: This year’s garden was a dismal disappointment. Too hot. No rain. Except for peppers and cucumbers I’ll grow in 15 gallon containers and Earth Box Containers, I’ve decided to till up the garden with commercial purchased compost/manure plus peat moss. Then seed with a cover crop which will be tilled next Spring.

This is a large backyard garden plot. Which cover crop might you guys recommend?

Hello Racehorse . . . you might want to call your local Gardenville store to see what they recommend for your area. They’re usually very knowledgeable folks.

Nothing about Colorado or Wyhoming suprises me, since I had several vacations there as a kid. Lots of snow packed high on each side of the road in June, hail as big as softballs and freezing temps outside Cody in June.

Bears and other wildlife running rampant through the campsite. Including a face to face encounter of about a foot with a big black bear when I opened to rest room door to come out. Needless to say I slamed the door quicker than lickety split. LOL

Depends. I have used rye, clover, and hairy vetch. Don’t mix the vetch with grains like winter wheat, though.
