Geeksdotcom ordering now closed
Geeks dot com ^ | 02 August 2013 | Utilizer

Depressing news for those of us who appreciate great prices on computer gear and component parts. The Geeks website now displays a simple page explaining that all ordering has now ceased. Competition appears to be the overriding reason, and a general unwillingness to have been forced to this point is quite apparent. I, for one, will miss all the great deals they offer, and have offered for many years.

I bought from them many years ago, but then stopped when the deals didn’t look so good compared to what I could find on EBay.

There were things you could get from geeks that simply were not available anywhere else. 4-port rackmountable KVM switchbox for 12.50US$, midsize ATX case with power supply and dual fans for 30US$, five recordable minidvds for 0.50, 80GB HD for 19.98, External USB 3.5" IDE HD case for 5.99...

Need I say more? *grin*

Thanks for that link, mate. Purplus.net has great deals on software, if you do not mind some older stuff. All good thus far on this end.

NewEgg has much better prices than Fry’s Electronics. Just recently purchased a new computer case: 19.99 on sale and 19.99 Mail-In Rebate with 5.99 shipping. Never seen Fry’s beat that.

Quite welcome, mate. Tip: ignore Buydotcom. Since they got bought out a few years back their offerings -even their ‘elite list’ ones’ just have proven to be more annoyance than anything else.

TigerDirect has never seemed to be all that good for My purposes. If I recall correctly, they are based in Florida -so the shipping charges for anything I order from them costs roughly twice the advertised price when all is totaled up.

Ehrmmm... make that: ‘so with the shipping charges added the final cost is roughly twice the item price in the end.’

Ha! That's what I thought at first, too. I've never heard of this place before, though. I always buy my computer gear from Newegg.

I would think that Fry’s is killing Geeks more than any other competitor. I spend 10 times as much there as I do at Geeks.

I agree. Around here, we love the 6-page ad on Frysday.

My bank has a newspaper sitting on one of the counters. Every Frysday I go in, cash a check, and steal the Frys ad.

www.frys.com/ads.

It comes online on Thursday night sometime before midnight. I can’t wait for the paper.

In the last year, I bought a 50 inch LED TV for $369, a Blu Ray with wifi for $29, a $229 photo camera with 20x optical zoom and HD recording for $89, a core i3 laptop for $338 (back when the closest I could get elsewhere was around $450), an HD video camera for $99, and tons of RAM, SD cards, flash drives, hard drives, and tons and tons of gadgets and gizmos that are often fractions of what I would pay elsewhere. I don’t know how they do it, I guess they figure that when we buy something super low we will get something else at retail and they will make money, but I almost never get anything there that isn’t one of the loss leaders. Love the place. My wife hates it.

One thing Fry's is rarely good at is computer cases and power supplies. I always went to Geeks for that. I checked Newegg for years when I bought stuff, and only bought something once from them, a flash drive that I regretted getting when I saw it on Fry's for less a week later. Whatever I wanted from Newegg was always lower on Tiger Direct, Geeks, Meritline or Fry's. Usually a lot less.

CPUs and motherboards are best on Amazon unless you can find a deal on a combo at TigerDirect or in a Fry's ad. Fry's combo deals are usually for AMD stuff, they don't discount the Intel cpus very often.

Hard drives are best at Fry's. Geeks had some good deals, too, but their best prices were usually on refurbished drives, and you take your chances with those.

Anyway, name an item, and I can tell you which place I would go first for the best deal on it. Sad to see one of my resources go bye-bye.
