St Edmund takes on St George for England's patron saint honour

One is a Roman soldier who killed a dragon, the other is a former King of East Anglia whose decapitated head was reunited with its body with the help of a talking wolf.

Both have been England's patron saint, and both have supporters who vehemently back their respective cause to hold the title.

But, St Edmund was Englishman who sacrificed his life for his people, as apposed to St George, a Turk who reputedly, Never set foot in England!

Never heard of Saint Edmund and the only time I ever heard Saint George's name mentioned was when Basil Fawlty and the Major talked briefly about him.I guess it's an English thing!

It all depends- what does St. Edmund’s flag look like? It’s going to be pretty tough to beat the cross of St. George!

St. George was born to a Greek Christian family in what is now Israel. He was martyred in Asia Minor, which is now Turkey.

This was about 1000 years before the Turks showed up there.

This is a non controversy. St George is the patron saint of England, St Edmund is the patron saint of the English.

Simple. Also very profound, if you know any English history.
