They chose it. Not the government. Government should stay out of everything involving your life. I wouldn’t chose this but at least they were not forced by the government. Less government the better.

Fact is, probably none of us know what it would be like to grow up deaf your whole life, and then face the prospect of losing your sight too. I think I would never do this, but I can’t say that I know so.
