During the Sandy aftermath the looters didn’t go all that far from their home.
I think the common assumption that we’ll see hordes of looters descending out of the city is misplaced. Those people will be out of gas and fighting each other for whats left.
Exactly.
Roads out of cities would be impassable.
Heck, people complain about commuting times when things are good, and their gas tanks are full!
That’s something that always in a way irritated me about people planning for some kind of “bug out” scenario.
Unless you can get out a good three days or so before SHTF, “bug out” is suicide.
If you are trapped on the road in your rig during the collapse, you are a sitting duck.
I agree. They'll remain in the cities, waiting for helicopters to drop more 'free stuff' from the sky, until they are out of fuel and desperate. At that point many of them will be unable to travel too much.
I just hope I'm moved out of the city before it all falls apart. I'm house-shopping immediately after Christmas.
I think you are right. The logistics of maneuver and communication during difficult times are hard enough for those that are prepared. Without intel, maps, transportation, comms, etc... looters won't have much chance.

Consider this: You’re in the city and out of food. Where is food made? The country.
I suspect we will see refugees, especially if we get an EMP attack, which will make the cities worse than useless for a time.
