Two golden retrieversOne each box of rocks and sack of hammers, but loyal to the end. Just say 'bang' and they start looking for falling ducks.
Sounds like the owner needs to work them, so they don't get into trouble.

First question... Why were they tied up outside alone on a leash?

They ran away. “Bad dog!”
They came home. “Good dog!”
Gotta love Goldens. They can be naughty, but they’re a beautiful breed.

Great story. Usually when goldens disappear around here, they’ve been stolen.

Why did this idiot leave them tied up while she left town. Something smells about this story.

Sorry, it seems I misread. Left town after dogs went missing. However, something still stinks here. I could swear I have seen these dogs before not in connection with them missing. I still say why were these dogs tied up in the yard. That can make them aggressive.

They could have just been tied up for 30 seconds. I’ve done that.
Come home from a walk in which my beagle decided to roll in HUMAN FECES. No way was she coming in the house like that. I tied her outside while I went in the house to get a plastic garbage bag to wrap her in so I could get her to where she could be hosed off (and washed six times and fumigated and scrubbed and destunkified and hosed some more).
I’ve brought dogs home from extremely muddy, stinky walks involving ponds, ducks, dead deer, deer urine, etc. and have said, “No way are you going in the house, stay here while I get the hose and a towel or three.”
So the owner might not have abandoned them outside; she might just have tied them too loosely for a couple of minutes.

"somehow they got loose and ran away."
I tend to agree (though I'd use the descriptions for the owner(s))
Why wouldn't they just return when called?
