Back in the 1950s, people in our neighborhood did not tie up their dogs or keep them indoors. And there were oodles of kids playing all over the neighborhood with their canine pets running loose and watching over them.
My family of 11 acquired a boxer named Rex, who was probably about 2 years old at the time . It was not until we had had the dog for a few years that my parents became thoroughly acquainted with his daily schedule.
After my mother would let Rex out in the morning, he would visit the back of a grocery store about 1 mile away. The butcher at the store, who called him “Sarge” because the dog reminded him of his sergeant in the army, would give him scraps that he had saved for him. Rex’s next stop was at a nearby drugstore that had a soda fountain. Someone there gave him food, as well.
Possibly he had other stops that we never became aware of, but we did learn that he had a daily rendezvous with the mailman and accompanied him on his rounds. There was also a delivery man of some sort — can’t remember now —who would sometimes call him to his truck, where the dog would ride around in the guy’s passenger seat happy as a lark. (He was a dog who love car rides.)
These people did not know whose dog this was for a long time, but he had made friends all over our neighborhood. Great memories.

Your post reminded me of a Raccoon that is working this neighborhood. It took an aluminum pie plate (like Icebox pies come in) I had left out with English Muffin scraps in it for the critters. But after three nights, it brought the pie plate back last night! I'm gonna have to be more diligent I guess, I took the act as a reminder ...

Duke was also the babysitter for the little ones when they went swimming at the spring branch and pulled my aunt out by her shorts one day when he thought she was unsafe.Too funny! When I was very little, we had a black lab (my best friend). When I was in the plastic baby pool in the yard, he would sit there guarding me, grabbing my swimsuit straps to keep me upright. I have a photo (I was three or so) of him sitting there right next to the little pool staring at me as I played. I love dogs...LOL!
