Sent Home From School - skirt Too Long
The Local ^

Posted on 04/15/2012 12:06:41 PM PDT by nickcarraway

A secondary school student near Paris was accused of wearing provocative clothing and sent back home. The school thought her skirt was too long, and conveyed religious values.

"Other students come dressed up as hippies or goths and nobody says anything," the girl, Khadija, told the French daily Le Parisien, "but I’m not even allowed to wear a gypsy skirt."

"If I had come to school wearing a veil I would have understood their reaction," says Khadija, who is a student at the Edmond-Rostand secondary school at Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône near Paris.

On Monday, Khadija was sent home from school for wearing a long skirt that according to the school conveyed religious values.

"It was a beautiful day, I wore a long skirt," says Khadija, "the headmistress told me I was being provocative and sent me home."

An official belonging to the local academic authority however denies Khadija was expelled from the school and says the skirt had only been "commented on".

"She takes her veil off before entering the school, but it’s our role to make comments to pupils who wear provocative clothes. We do the same with a girl who comes to school with a bare belly," said the unnamed official in an interview with Le Parisien.

In 2004, a ban on religious symbols in schools came into effect, meaning Muslims girls were no longer allowed to wear a veil in class.

Khadija however believes the school is not allowed to comment on her clothes and insists she will not shorten her skirts.

Stay the hell home then!

I doubt very much that those running the school are much in the mood for the inmates to be running the asylum.

Oh, good gravy! All women except cabaret dancers wore long skirts in Edmond Rostand’s day.

Are there pictures of the skirt she wore? There’s ankle length for modest, there is “so long she trips” and there is “I have to hike up my skirts to walk so no one even sees my ankles” idiocy.

When I was in middle school (mid ‘70’s) “granny” dresses and peasant blouses and long skirts were all the rage for a time. Nobody thought them provocative. In fact my mother, even though she didn’t like the “hippy” look, much preferred that to some other attire I wore; or wanted to wear at the time like miniskirts and low riding skin tight bell bottom hip hugger jeans.

My mom used to buy me below the knee skirts which I used to roll up at the waist to make shorter as soon as I was a few blocks from the house. Now I wear pants or longer skirts to cover up my varicose veins. ; ),

Because what goes on "over there", will be happening here before you know it.

An official belonging to the local academic authority however denies Khadija was expelled from the school and says the skirt had only been "commented on".

So much to read between the lines.

First, it appears the school is saying she wasn't sent home; they just "commented on" it. Since she exaggerated the incident, it sounds as if the little missy *was* trying to be provocative.

Second, France is making the same error that USA schools when they try to banish anything "religious." There *will* be some sort of religion whenever you get any group of people together whether it be atheism or humanism or Islam or whatever. Islam certainly isn't preferable, but trying to ban people expressing it is like trying to ban gang symbols in USA schools. It won't happen unless everything the kid wears and possesses, including hair styles, notebooks, pencils, jewelry, etc., is strictly controlled -- sounds rather...Islamic.

The absolute BEST way to defeat the scourge that is Islam is to allow, even encourage, people to freely berate and discriminate against those whose ideas are antithetical to civilized society such as honor killings, forcing women to be property, religious-sanctioned wife abuse, murder of anyone leaving the religion, etc. Treat adherents to Islam like their brethren the skinheads, and they will be defeated.

I remember having to kneel to show my regulation skirt hit the floor and was not a mini. It was not until several years into working at a corporation that the dress code was relaxed to allow for pants suits.

It’s possible that the student exaggerated the incident; on the other hand the school administrators may be trying to dial back what they actually said.

You’re right — there’s so much to read between the lines.

When I first saw this story I thought it was satire.

It’s sort of like the little boy who told Dr. Joycelyn Elders “we learned how to make babies,”
“WELL, IT’S ABOUT TIME!”
“You change the y to i and add -es.”
