In yesteryears I saw a purple Thing down at the beach.

I'll post notice of an upcoming birthday, if somebody would like to give me a Thing. I thought they were atrocious at the time, but now I'd love to own one in good condition. Then again, I'm a VW guy. A Wesfalia "Westy" VW Type 2 (the Type 2's what people call a "minibus") or a Karmann Ghia convertible wouldn't be so bad, either.

I think we should all get vintage VW Things and make them the official vehicle of the UT.

Some really good discussion on the Thread today. Sorry I missed it.

"I think we should all get vintage VW Things and make them the official vehicle of the UT."

No. It's still ugly.

However, original VW Beetles will be acceptable. I was joshing with someone today about the Beetle. I recalled the scene in Woody Allen's "Sleepers" in which he finds a VW parked along a beach, presumably having sat there for many decades. He got in and started it up. "They really knew how to build cars in those days!", he said.

Then my conversant mentioned a comedy film in which someone spotted a VW on the moon, and it also could run!

I don't know which movie that may have been, but I want to talk about the VW anyway.

I told the fellow that a VW could be tricked out to act as an air compressor. With stored air, and an appropriate fuel, a Beetle would be able to operate on the moon pretty much like the Lunar Rover.

I had previously envisioned setting up a "Herbie" style adventure for Mars. But after The Brave Little Toaster went there, there seemed to be no point to sending Herbie.
