I was watching the finale with two musician friends who have never watched AI before....
them: "who's going to win?"
me: "the white guy with the guitar"
them: "why?"
me: "the white guy with the guitar always wins"
I read them some of our snarky comments and we cracked up. Getting together on this thread these last few years has been a joy, a distraction, and a beautiful escape.

You are right. Duets was boring imo. Why is everything in the key of slow? I like my music with a little gusto. Neil Diamond has no voice left - it was a total trainwreck. Skylar shouldn’t be wearing Santa Claus belts. Maybe Hilfiger did the fifty yard dash away from AI when the ratings were down. Fogarty over botoxed.
Yes, she was cuter as a blonde. I wish they would have zoomed in on the ring. Maybe that’s why their ratings are down. Whoever is directing the cameras, they are missing good stuff and the audio was bad and JLo ALWAYS lip syncs. The contestants are always better than JLo - it’s a charade that she can sing but she’s the biggest celeb per Forbes mag so who am I to judge?
It would have been extremely tacky to mention the jeweler either way. I don’t spent that much time re: AI to do research but tacky to mention the jeweler either way.
I sing in real life and although I would have liked to turn out to be the torch singer, alas, I'm always "the cute one". I can't change it cuz my voice is all boop boop bee doop. Did you hear about my you tube? Nancy Kay Singer (Middle of an Island). That will drive the other cup of tea up the wall. Don't tell. She's okay by me too. :)
It wasn’t tacky to mention the jeweler since they made the ring to order. It was his way of thanking the jeweler for their work.
I tuned in to Duets but it lost my interest early on so I changed channels.

It's obvious that the great majority of Free Republic American Idol thread denizens despise the show...they can't stand the judges, they mock the host and the producers and they root for the performers with the least musical talent each year, reflecting the sentiments of the "Vote For The Worst" website, which has the stated goal of causing the ratings to drop so far that the show is cancelled.
The majority of Free Republic members on this thread have pulled primarily for the same performers "Vote For The Worst" has promoted over the past five years, namely:
David Cook
Chris Allen
Lee DeWyze
Scotty McCreery
Phillip Phillips
The ratings for American Idol were off significantly this year, much to the delight of the Vote For The Worst-ers. America has grown tired of the best singers only being able to place as high as second. "Vote For The Worst" has an acronym for its strategy: "WGWG."

Anybody who thinks David Cook is a better singer than David Archuleta is deaf.
In my opinion, Kris Allen is every bit as good as Adam Lambert, who has no soul whatsoever. BUT! Anybody who thinks Kris Allen is a better singer than Danny Gokey is a bona fide idiot.
Anybody who thinks Taylor Hicks is better than Kellie Pickler, Chris Daughtry, Katherine McPhee or Elliot Yamin needs heavy psychological therapy.
Anybody who thinks Lee DeWyze is better than Crystal Bowersox or Michael Lynch is a musical sub-Neanderthal.
And anyone who thinks Phillip Phillips is a better singer than Skylar Laine, Joshua Ledet, Shannon Magraine, Colton Dixon, Jessica Sanchez, Elise Testone, Erica Van Pelt, Deandre Breckensick or Hollie Cavanaugh needs to stop listening to music, because the music to which they've chosen to listen is destroying their ability to hear quality...and anyone incapable of hearing quality is playing a part in America's cultural demise.

Did you hear all that pitchiness in the men's performances of the Bee Gees and Neil Diamond songs? That was pretty much due to Rosado (and to Neil, when he was "singing").
I also enjoyed listening to Reba and Skylar, although Reba's mic was hotter and it made Skylar, for the first time during any AI performance, sound weak in comparison to someone.

Jessica Sanchez, runner-up in season 11 of American Idol, is set to receive the lowest payout in the show’s history.
According to The AP, past second prize winners of the Fox singing competition show have received a guaranteed advance of at least $175,000 (£111,000), as well as a full album deal.
However show bosses have produced a new contract in which future runners-up, including Sanchez, will receive between $30,000 (£19,000) to $60,000 (£38,000) in advances for singles or EP records.
The deal also stipulates that winner Phillip Phillips will receive a $300,000 (£190,000) advance upon completion of his first studio album.
He stands to collect up to $800,000 (£510,000) if he is able to qualify for a six-album deal with production company 19 Recordings, who handle all Idol contestants.
Reps for 19 Recordings Inc. and American Idol have declined to comment on the new contracts.
Dwindling payouts, audiences.
Seems like idol is need of some major retooling.
The second place payout dwindled. I was wondering if the winners payout went down or went up. They didn’t advertise the celebs that would be on the finale and I think that would have helped their viewership. Umm maybe not some of the ones they had this year. :)
If they get rid of the handsome white guys with acoustic guitars their ratings will skyrocket.

Less money for the runner-up might give them the freedom to sign other promising singers from the Top 13. I don't know--that's a total guess.

Shoulda done a closeup on the ring woulda been nice though... Duets were slow ballads. I am so sick of slow ballads. Ballads don’t have to be slow. Duets is another lullabye show.
Is the tween birth rate down? A retooling for an older audience who likes faster music and less screaming just might work..... : )

Well, they no longer give the runner up a contract. I wonder if that means the runner up is allowed to sign up with some other label, earlier than in the past.
Erica Van Pelt deserved better. She was quite good. She had a prominent gumline and was on the chunky side, but she was talented, game and a good sport.
Diana does so many other things, maybe someone will interview her and get a pic.
