Okay, FReepers know everything, so here's a question: what should I look for in a self-defense cane?
Four knee surgeries and the prospect of a knee replacement, combined with having to make my run times for the next 4 years till I retire, have made me seriously consider using a cane for both occasional support and for self-defense. Anybody got an idea on the best cane for both support and self-defense?

Go to the store on VladamirPutin.com. There are canes with interchangeable ricin and Polonium tips.
Herman Cain is the best choice for defense. He won’t cut the budget!
What?
It’s cane?
Oh, never mind.
Don’t settle for anything less than a 12 gauge with twist action safety, 3 round magazine, and jam proof barrel cover.
Nien! Nien! Nien!
Sir, respectful may I suggest that you might be best finding something like this of correct high quality in a pawn or second hand shop of notable standing.
Those folks on tv come to mind, but of course there are many non celebrity operations around there and in California of the same ilk.
Why not go antique. I’m sure it would be superior in all regards.
20 guage works well, because any perp will be in close.
The problem with sword canes is often carrying edged weapons like that can almost get you in more trouble than carrying a firearm.
There are some good tactical canes martial artists use- usually made of rattan or other specially treated wood. The styles also vary a lot too.
Just like a gun, what is right for you is what you are most comfortable with and can practice. I think getting the training and experience should be more of a focus.
Get yourself some Lotte Lenya shoes and have some kicks.
ignoring my last comment, this guy makes some really awesome stuff.

mn - agreed that training and experience are most important. I should have know to expect Cain, cane sword and shotgun responses! Gotta love those FReepers!
I was mainly looking for direction on a sturdy rattan or wood cane and some guidance on fighting styles.

Last I heard, Cold Steel makes a few models of sword cane. They’re nasty, and may be illegal in your state, but try here: http://www.coldsteel.com/
Cold Steel makes an extremely fine product, and these items will never break or let you down.
Better to have a blade and not need it than not to have one when the crunch comes.
Any particular reason you might decline to carry a firearm?
Check out cold steel canes. Several without swords, made of acrylic with a big silver head. You could beat the f**k out of anyone, and the cane won’t break.
See if you can find the book- The Way of the Short Staff by Michael Garafolo(sp?) I’m not sure it is still in print, couldn’t find it on Amazon but I have an old copy around here somewhere. Provides some basics on different styles, techniques and the science behind the cane itself.
