Article addresses some of the realities of teaching today. As a former teacher because of a similar story to the one addressed in the article, I agree with the article's assertion that the problems with getting quality teachers are not resolved simply with paying them more.

If parents would care about their children and at least ensure they did their homework, we would have a better system. No child left behind was supposed to give that kick in the butt that President Bush wanted so much. It did not work so well. Parents are 100 percent of the problem.

If teachers did their jobs, kids wouldn’t have 2-3 hours of homework every night in elementary school and 5-8 in high school. Parents are NOT 100% of the problem.
Teachers need to teach academics not social justice.

All I can say is, “God bless the teachers who stick around for many years and never cave in to the parents or the admin and continue to do what needs to be done.” I see what kind of kids are running around the neighborhoods today and I can’t help but wonder what is going to happen to America.

I asked a guy once; What does it say about priorities when people are willing to pay a mechanic two to three times per hour to work on a car, what they are willing to pay a teacher to teach a classroom full of children?

The response was that the mechanic is a professional who has to study and work to stay current with new automotive technology.

American schools will continue to decline as more 3rd world immigrants - legal and illegal - continue to be allowed to come into this nation and get free schools for their kids (and citizenship for illegal aliens) in such massive numbers. There is no possile way to assimilate this unprecedented wave of humanity into our schools at this rate. And the change in policy from mandating children learn English first, to accomodating their native languages and “cultures” has devastated those kids ability to succeed. The best laid plans of liberals have brought this nation’s school system to its knees.

Exactly right. Homework is the teachers outsourcing their own responsiblities to the parents.

I totally agree.

My 3rd and 4th grader have way too much homework. They’ve already had an 8 hour day, and then 2-3 hours more?

I’ve pushed back on some of the assignments but most of it they are stuck with.

What a stupid comment. My wife is a teacher. A very dedicated one. She's certainly not in it for the money (it's not much) ... it's more of a calling. She is very educated and they do indeed have to stay on top of current methods AND technologies. She took 10 years off to stay home with our kids before going back to work. There was a LOT of prep she had to do and many things to learn that had changed over that 10 years.

And regarding this article ... it's spot on what she has had to deal with in her career. In the district she teaches in now, it's become a parents-in-control situation. Unfortunately, the school board and administrators have allowed this to happen.

Hmmm...if the mechanic told me it would take him 12 years to fix my car, and that there was a good chance it still wouldn’t run right, I wouldn’t pay HIM much either!

Lets do not go into paranoia, no one hates teachers, they just believe teachers should be teaching reading, writing and arithmetic instead of social justice ( meaning socialism )and the new age, that is for the parents to decide, they work for the parents not the other way around, this is not the ussr, not yet anyway.

My sister and her husband both teach in Arizona. Neither one complains about parents. Both complain long & loud about the administration, and the stupid rules and paperwork that flood them.

If your car was something you expected to last 80 years, you'd put money into getting it done right.

It's a self-fulfilling cycle -- keep pay low, many good people won't stay, but people who aren't so good will.

The ones who aren't so good get the attention, so that is used as justification for low pay.

So many of the really good ones don't stay.

So that becomes justification for keeping the pay low.

It isn't the trite, "If it took a mechanic 12 years to fix a car non sequitor you toss that's the issue.

It's more the "me" syndrome and the need for immediate gratification.

Spend money on your car -- it makes you feel good now.

Spend money on your kid's education -- it takes longer and is something you have to put some effort of your own into.
