Here, we've chosen the best places for pizza around the country from new guard spots—including a Bay Area pizzeria that uses locally milled flour—to the nearly century-old East Coast institutions started by the original pizzaiolo obsessives that loyalists still (rightfully) love.

New York City; Co.

Is this place owned by the writer's uncle or something?
Never heard of it.

And every local magazine and newspaper takes it upon themselves to rate the best pizzas in the entire city, so I've seen many, many top ten lists. And I know people who have gone all over.

I've never seen the name of that place or heard of their signature "Popeye".

I know that "virgin" olive oil is oil from the first pressing, so what the heck is "extra-virgin"?

It never made sense to me.

B.S. The best pizza is from those little Italian joints with the red plastic cups and Leaning Tower of Pisa paper place mats, and those places are EVERYWHERE.

I live in New York City (for only another few months), and, despite eating more than my share of pizza here, cannot say it’s any better than most other places.

Oh, poor me, I cannot find “decent” pizza outside New York City. Bunch of wine-sipping nancypants.

Some dishes require plain olive oil b/c the extra virgin is too strong...but evo is great in salads and dips, on subs. I think the difference is more of a marketing tool.

The business grades oil as:

* Virgin means the oil was produced by the use of physical means and no chemical treatment.

* Refined means that the oil has been chemically treated to neutralize strong tastes (characterized as defects) and neutralize the acid content (free fatty acids). Refined oil is commonly regarded as lower quality than virgin oil.

* Oils with the retail labels extra-virgin olive oil and virgin olive oil cannot contain any refined oil.

"just give me"

That's the problem. The food snobs think all good food has to be made by the original immigrants or their extended family. The fact is many places around the country have pizza (as well as other types of chow) that will greatly satisfy 98% of the citizenry. It's only the food nazis who hold their noses and expect all foods to be prepared by elite chefs. There's a place not far from my house in a small town in the midwest that has great pizza. That's good enough for me.

When I would visit my Mom & Dad in Glendale, NY we’d always get pizza from Grace’s Pizza (7005 Myrtle Ave) around the corner. Oh man, so good...

Red Grease...
Any pizza with red grease pooling on the top is bound to be a study in decadence!

Mineo’s

I like Mineo's. A good one is Vincent's Pizza Park in Plum Boro.

If you ever make it to Atlantic City, try the Pizza at The Bally’s Wild Wild West Casino, on the boardwalk. Before I tasted this, like you, I had never had a bad pizza. This pizza is bad. Just buy a slice, you’ll only need one bite to see what I mean.

Well...you have issues with symmetry. Beyond that it looks pretty damn good.

With much practice I have gotten better. Now it's absolute perfection.

"I eat pizza and never had a bad one, just some better than others."

Pizza is like sex.
When it's good it's REALLY good.
When it's bad...
it's still pretty good.

Cool. Got a pizza stone. Got a low carb recipe to try. The grill pizza is catching on.

Pizza grilling is so easy and doesn't heat up the kitchen. It also tastes so much better. 10 minutes to a gourmet delight.

Pepe’s in New Haven is notorious for it’s good pizza (it’s ok but far from my favorite). People like Frank Sinatra would make “their people” drive up (a really far distance for pizza) to go pick it up for him when he was in the NYC area playing.
