MacDailyNews Take: Schnappy!
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
I’ll come back and look at this when I’m not exhausted.
I received the upgrade tonight - just in time for football season.
here is an interesting piece of Tech data about medical students - 80% of a new class, at a big school, had a Mac AND a PC. What does that mean? I don’t have an answer it is pure “question”
They hide ~/Library again too.
80% of a new class, at a big school, had a Mac AND a PCPerhaps for the same reason I have a Windows virtual machine running on my Mac: There are some things they can only do on a Windows PC, but they prefer Macs.
I’m undecided whether to upgrade to Lion. Any real advantage or features I can’t do without?
There are tons of improvements in Lion... and I am learning more everyday. One of the most important is that you will never lose an important document due to forgetting to save it again. There is no longer a save choice... you give it a name when you start work and it’s just done automatically when you exit. Versions of the document you are working on are automatically managed.
They’ve added window resizing to every window edge or corner... similar to Microsoft Windows windows (that sounds repetitive), and a lot more. Scroll bars are a thing of the past as you use gestures to scroll or you can set them to appear when you need them. Default scrolling is at first backwards from what you are used to until you switch your thinking... then you say “why was it the other way for all these years??? This is the natural way!” Shutting down the computer doesn’t require you to shut down all your apps... restarting takes you back to where you left off in all your apps and documents! AirDrop allows auto-networking and sharing of documents and files with computers on your LAN. FileVault 2 allows full disk encryption with AES-128 encryption and if your Mac is stolen, you can remote remove the key... and if that’s not enough, remote wipe the data after key removal with military grade erasure. For security, Lion sandboxes applications... and uses Application and library Address Space Layout randomization to prevent hacking for both 32 and 64 bit applications.
For $29.99 its well worth the price.
One thing that takes a bit of getting used to is adding iOS like predictive typing... It can be a boon or a bedeviling hindrance... until you get used to it. They’ve also hidden the user library... so if you’re used to tweaking your library, it’s a bit harder to do. For most users, they’ll never miss it.
Swordmaker, I use two monitors for my graphics on the right and the toolbars and palettes on the left, I’ve read that people can’t do two monitors with Lion.
Do you know if that’s true?
Thanks,
Ed
Thanks for the info.
As far as predictive typing, Went through that yesterday.
Tried to type SUV in my phone, it refused to accept it, kept displaying SUN. Finally went into Settings and turned it off.
You want SUV, you just tap on the little x next to the displayed “sun” below what you typed before you tap the space bar. it will accept your choice. Alternately, turn on the caps lock option and double click the shift key and type SUV, and it will accept the acronym in most cases.
It's not true.
There's an issue with some programs in full screen mode, but it's handled by just not using those few by not using them in full screen mode.
Thanks, Sword!
I’ll probably upgrade, then
See ya’,
Ed
