I am having surgery tomorrow and will have up to an eight month horrible recovery. I have a wonderful team of doctors so I got that going for me. Yes, I am totally scared but am looking to being well again. Prayers are very welcomed.
I am looking for something to do as I will be bedridden for much of that time and thought of learning Arabic or Spanish through the Rosetta Stone. Any suggestions? I just want to turn this negative into a positive. And make good use of my time. (and this is my first post. Not sure if I am posting in he right area) Many thanks everyone!!!
Yes, Chinese! It is a written AND spoken language, and totally absorbing. You will want to keep studying it even after recovery!
Prayers to you.
Two words to forget while you are healing..
Angry Birds
Hope you will recover fast. I had 3 surgeries and all I know those doctors are amazing... Good thing we live in America.. Prayers on your way.
Prayers to you
Praying for successful surgery and recovery.
FReeRepublic is a great place to spend time, always entertaining.
When you get home and feel like it, put up a new thread about your experience in the hospital, your thoughts while in the hospital.
We will look forward to hearing from you soon.
Here is to a speedy recover.
I suggest learn mandarin Chinese, because by the time 8 months are over they will own us.
The Janette Oakes books (and movies) are uplifting (”Love’s Enduring Promise”, etc.).
A twist on the language idea would be American Sign Language. I have learned a little of it and have found it to be very enjoyable. You could read books or watch TV shows/movies and use American Sign Language to translate what you are hearing.
Write notes or encouragement. I know someone who is a great encourager. She is always writing notes of encouragement to people who need a lift. You can always find people worse off than you are and it takes your mind off yourself. You could get a list of people who need encouragement from your church, a community group, family or friends.
Plan imaginary trips. Pick a country or region in a country. Read travel books about it or research it online. Plan an itinerary complete with sights you want to see, hotels, restaurants, etc. Who knows, maybe after you are well, you could take one of the trips you planned.
Needlework or crafts would be a good pastime. My mother crochets tiny knit caps for the preemie unit at the local hospital-really cute and easy to do. There are computer programs to teach you piano.
Keep a prayer journal and spend time praying. If you can have company, ask a friend or two to meet with you weekly for a time of Bible study, hymn singing, and/or prayer.
You are doing the right thing by planning projects with purpose to keep you busy and enrich your life. Think of those things you’ve always wanted to learn more about or do, but never had time. Pursue them to the best of your ability.
Prayers for a speedy recovery. Keep your spirits high and report occasionally on FR what you’re up to.

Prayers for complete healing up for you. Two surgeries in one week, did a close one to that. Went in one Friday for surgery, just about the time I was starting to get a clear head and a bit of energy, doc said the other half had to go, too. Two Fridays in a row... fun fun.
ANYway, not sure if you’ll be able to sit up but with that kind of time, scrapbooking! And reading and learning your new languages and movies...
What do you mean this is your 1st post?

I’ll pray for you and you should learn Spanish. Way more useful.
Pick a language that you can practice with a native speaker. If you don’t use it, you won’t achieve fluency.
She obviously meant that this was her first vanity post. Be kind...Tomorrow is going to be a brutal day our FRiend.
Prayers for your successful surgery and a recovery that goes more quickly than you are anticipating. Attitude is everything! Keeping yourself busy with a major project you would never undertake under normal circumstances is a step in the right direction.
One of my sons has been learning Japanese with Rosetta Stone. I don’t know much about it, but it seems the best way to learn, and you could probably just do it at your own rate.
Also saw a suggestion of organizing family pictures if that would be relevant to your circumstances.
Whatever you do, just be patient with yourself if on a given day you are slower or don’t feel like doing it ... you’ll be back in the right time. Don’t put any unnecessary stress on yourself.
God bless.
I was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer last August and had surgery which takes a good six months to recover from. During my recuperation I found many interests, but what brought me the most meaningful moments and joy were when I opened my heart to learn the lessons of love from our Lord Jesus. I actually cherished those times more than any other educational endeavor that I made.
May God keep your spirits strong and cause his Grace to shed his love upon you as you recover from this surgery. May your capacity to love grow exponentially with the suffering you may endure. It is when we are suffering the most that God shows himself to us the most...we just need to open our hearts and receive his Grace. I pray that you will have the opportunity and will to do so. Amen
My prayers are with you for successful surgery and complete recovery.
Kindles are wonderful things! You can read, but you can also surf, email, etc. And there are games. And language programs.
I had a dear pastor tell me, “Healing is in the Word.” Get an easy translation of the Bible. Read and claim God’s promises. God keeps His promises.

Read the Bible from cover to cover.
Prayers up for a successful surgery and recovery. Keep us posted now, hear?
