Worst Acting in a Major Movie (Name your examples)
Self | June 26, 2011 | PJ-Comix

I was just watching the original "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Yes, he deserved his Oscar for the role of Rooster Cogburn but opposite him was someone who played his part horribly. I am talking about Glenn Campbell as the Texas Ranger. Sheesh! Talk about stilted delivery. Really bad. Another example of bad acting was also in a John Wayne movie---"The Alamo." It was Frankie Avalon as Smitty who was supposed to be a young Tennessee frontiersman. I like Frankie Avalon in the beach flicks but, let's face it, he was waaay too urban to be believable in the role of Smitty. Whenever I see "The Alamo," it is impossible to forget that this is just a movie because of Frankie Avalon's completely unconvincing acting.

There are many other major movies with examples of really horrible acting. I cited a couple of such examples, so please list yours.

Jude Law in the remake of Sleuth. Why Michael Caine decided to waste himself on that I don’t know. I recall the original as being a good movie but the remake is garbage.

Gary Cooper was an awful actor.

He was as wooden as a fence post.

That’s funny...I said essentially the same thing to my wife as we left that movie.

Actually, I really liked Cage in Moonstruck. Yes, it was over the top, but the movie is sort of an Italian parody.

“I ain’t no freakin’ monument to justice! I lost my hand! I lost my bride! Johnny has his hand! Johnny has his bride! You want me to take my heartache, put it away and forget?”

I love that movie, and if you are a Brooklyn Italian, it all makes sense to you.

Everybody in "At Long Last Love".

There should be people in jail for that monstrosity. The most interesting thing about that movie is the number countdown to the start.

Speaking of John Wayne, I cringe at his performance in The Longest Day.

Everyone sucked in The Longest day. it was The Longest Movie.

Arnold Schwarzeneggar as Conan, and he was lousy in Total Recall too.

I thought so, too.

This may cheer you up:

I actually love the movie too....but the hand part makes me laugh...the best line is when Cher slaps him and says “snap out of it!”

To your first point, John Wayne played best only characters who were depicted as American. Period.

As to your second question, I was deployed to Central Asia and spoke with Uzbeks, Tadjiks, Kyrgyz and Kazakhs. They all admired the region’s greatest conquerors: Aleksandr Makedonskii (the Great), Temujin (Genghis Khan) and Timur the Lame (Tamerlaine).

How these historical figures would have been authentically depicted in film, I don’t know except that an ethnic Central Asian actor would have done better with the latter two than the quintessentially American icon, John Wayne. Yeah, there’s probably no one in the filmmaking capitals of Tashkent or Bishkek with equal star quality.

Casting Genghis Khan as a romantic hero is a bit of a stretch anyway, IMO.

Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire. He overacts HORRIBLY! Worse than Jim Carrey.

Sean Young with Kevin Costner in No Way Out. This was actually a good end of the Cold War thriller, but Sean Young was (and in everything else) terrible!!

Geena Davis in “ The Long Kiss Goodnight “ . It probably wasn’t her fault , maybe just a very bad script . It’s so bad it’s funny .

I read through the whole thread, and no one corrected you on that, so I will say it: Wesley Snipes wasn’t in Snakes on a Plane. It was Samuel L. Jackson. Snipes was in some bad movies, for sure, but that wasn’t one of them. And yes, “Snakes” was a horrible movie.
