Worst Acting in a Major Movie (Name your examples)

I was just watching the original "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Yes, he deserved his Oscar for the role of Rooster Cogburn but opposite him was someone who played his part horribly. I am talking about Glenn Campbell as the Texas Ranger. Sheesh! Talk about stilted delivery. Really bad. Another example of bad acting was also in a John Wayne movie---"The Alamo." It was Frankie Avalon as Smitty who was supposed to be a young Tennessee frontiersman. I like Frankie Avalon in the beach flicks but, let's face it, he was waaay too urban to be believable in the role of Smitty. Whenever I see "The Alamo," it is impossible to forget that this is just a movie because of Frankie Avalon's completely unconvincing acting.

There are many other major movies with examples of really horrible acting. I cited a couple of such examples, so please list yours.

I also remember George Plimpton doing a horrible job as a Western bad guy. I also really enjoyed "The Blue Max" but George Peppard was way too American to convince me that he was German. Come to think about it, I never did buy Richard Burton as Leon Trotsky. Epic fail there too.

Too general. Please cite SPECIFIC role examples.

Arnold Schwarzeneggar as Conan, and he was lousy in Total Recall too.

Gary Cooper was an awful actor...yet he appears in many of my favorite movies...Sgt. York, High Noon, The Fountainhead, Meet John Doe...go figure.

Laurence Olivier playing a dentist?

You oughta see John Wayne’s early, early serial Westerns for bad acting lessons.

Honestly, it would be easier to name the “Best Acting”.....because there’s soooooo much bad.

This movie review about the remake of “the Day the Earth Stood Still” was one of the better slams I’ve read in years:

“Simply put, the script is just howlingly awful, full of dialogue and situations that make it not just impossible but pointless to suspend disbelief. Mr. Derrickson tries to fill the screen with the sort of flashy sequences that viewers expect from this kind of movie, but the results are much more aw-shucks than shock-and-awe.

The pulsing globe-of-light thing is nothing we haven’t seen before, the giant robot looks like something out of an ‘80s heavy-rock video, and then there is Keanu Reeves as the alien, Klaatu. An alien who is all but emotionless and speaks in a monotone – isn’t that the role Mr. Reeves was born to play? Based on previous performances, you might think so, and yet he still seems shallow and unconvincing. There are supposed to be some deep reverberations going on within Klaatu as he comes to realize that we humans have some good qualities beneath our hateful surface, but watching Mr. Reeves’ face is like staring at a TV tuned to a dead station.

Keanu Reeves is a wonder star! You wonder why he’s a star!

I mean beyond the merely bad acting to the downright HORRIBLE. And please cite SPECIFIC examples.

John Wayne may have won an Oscar for his role in True Grit, however, the Academy should have taken it right back for his role as Genghis Khan, in ‘The Conqueror’ and just chalk up the act as bringing the universe back into balance.

Where to start? “The Man in the Iron Mask” is ripe with really bad acting. Leonardo DiCaprio as a french king? yikes and that John Malkovitch..I cringe whenever he opened his mouth and that poor little french girl (Judith Godrèche)who played Raoul’s fiancee...awful...and the guy who played Raoul (Peter Sarsgaard)...even worse. Jeremy Irons and Gabriel Byrne actually make the movie worth watching....The last 10 minutes were the best...magnificent valor....just amazing how many accents were rampant in that movie.
