Pet pit bull mauls and kills 15-day-old baby

Pit bulls and other large dogs continue to maim and kill people. Is it because these dogs are aggressive and dangerous or are they owned by irresponsible and careless people?

Buster didn't have a history of being aggressive. He was a family pet, a year old and hyper like many young dogs. Buster's owner, 25-year-old Mallory Wildig had been staying at her mother's house following the birth of Darius on February 4 along with her 2-year-old son, Keylin Tillman. She would return home to feed Buster and let him outside. The times she couldn't get home a friend of her father would stop by to feed the dog. Wildig and her two children returned home on February 19. She had Keylin feed the dog, he was then let outside and given a bath afterward.

After reading to the children in Keylin's room she turned a movie on for Keylin and took the infant to her room for a nap. After closing the door she returned to Keylin's room and laid down with him for his nap. The dog was on the floor near them. Her cell phone woke her up about 10 minutes later. She went to check on Darius and found him on the floor dead.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety report said she, “discovered that Darius was dead and had been mauled and partially consumed by Buster."

The report said she sobbed throughout her initial interview with Detective Sheila Goodell. According to Mlive.com Wildig told the detective when she found her son his bassinet was tipped over and Darius was on the floor.

According to the police report Wildig said, “When I walked into the room, there was blood on the bassinet and he just looked like a little doll on the floor. It felt like all of this was a nightmare.”

Charges of involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to animals were sought against Wildig, but the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office declined to authorize charges. lamazoo County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Carrie Klein said, “This was her baby. She loved her baby. She was traumatized by what happened.”

Klein said to charge Klein there there would have be gross negligence showed.

Klein said, “Nobody ever saw any aggressive or violent tendencies from the pet at all. There was no way for the mother to know it was going to attack and kill someone. It was not gross negligence on her part to have the dog running loose in the house with the baby in the bassinet. She had no way of knowing the dog was going to do what it did.”

Buster was euthanized and an autopsy showed the dog's stomach was full of food.

Last month, Saquina Jubeark, a mother of three little boys, ages 2, 4 and 5 said she left the room they were in to get something out of the stroller. When she returned to the room where the boys were she saw her Cane Corso tearing at the 4-year-old. The little boy died from being bitten in the head and neck.

According to neighbors the home was like a zoo with the Cane Corso, a pit bull, a German Shepherd, a parrot and a snake.

Neighbors said it took 10 firefighters to remove the dogs from the home.

Nydailynews.com reports Kenny Riser the superintendent of the building said "People were scared of those dogs. The dogs belong to the husband, who is seldom here. This was a tragedy waiting to happen."

Shelbra Freeman, 72-years-old saw her neighbors pit bull loose and was trying to let them know when the dog turned on her.

Another neighbor heard the dog barking and when she went outside she saw Freeman near her yard. wyff4.com reports her neighbor Erica Sykes said, "(Freeman) was just laying here screaming for help and she had blood running everywhere. So, I just wrapped her arm up with a towel and squeezed it real tight and just tried to help her breathe and calm down because she was still screaming .All I was worried about was just helping her. I mean, it was shocking."

Another neighbor said, "I ran over there. She was sitting up with her ear lobe chewed off and blood all over her arms and, I mean, it was just horrible." Freeman is recovering in a hospital.

Chad McBride from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said the dog is being quarantined for 10 days and the owner, David Milner, has been cited for no proof of rabies and dog running at large.

Re: dogsbite.org

I contacted dogsbite.org with information derived from a phone conversation
I had with an Animal Control officer in San Antonio.

A dog involved in a fatality, identified in the media as a `pit bull`, was observed by the officer.
She told me, in no uncertain terms, that the dog was not a `pit bull`.

I contacted dogsbite.org with this fact,
naively assuming it was a reputable website
interested in compiling accurate information.

I was wrong. To this day they still call the dog a `pitbull`.

In my opinion any site that knowingly falsifies information
can not be trusted and should not be used as a source.

The poster makes money by testifying about ‘pitbulls’ in court cases.
He is not an impartial commentator.

That means I know what the hell I am talking about. I have been grilled by the best of them. Numbers do not lie people who don’t want to deal with fact and reality often do. They always want to believe that it will never happen with their pit bull. If you had to prepare for a case or two and study all the bites on a set of corners photos of a dead child you might just have a little different feeling in the pit of your stomach too. But until you can face reality you can just keep your head buried in the sand or where ever you keep it and continue to ignore the well documented facts and statistics.

“Oh I have seen the oceans of ‘information’ posted by pro pit people. Doesn’t change the well earned reputation of pits for unprovoked, sustained damage most often resulting in death. I have tried talking through that kind of padding that the pro pit throws - it was like speaking to a wall. The need for the pro pit lobby to deny the actual, documented behavior of pits is too strong to give way to reason.”

“She told me, in no uncertain terms, that the dog was not a `pit bull`.”

Were you unaware that there is a subculture of veternarians, animal shelters, and yes, animal control officers, who believe the breed is falsely maligned and lie about these dogs as a matter of conscience - because they feel the public is not smart enough to arrive at the ‘right’ decision. For example, had you read the web page of the veterinarian who bragged about sneaking past the Breed Specific Laws going into effect in her community by falsely declaring her pit to be a service dog? Read the PowerPoint presentation by that animal shelter lying about the safety of pit bulls but if you read all the way to the end of the document, you find special instructions (two people needed at all times to handle) for pit bulls? Owners lie about their dogs all the time and they DO NOT feel bad about it - they brag about it. You walk up and see a pit bull dressed in a baby bonnet with a pacifier hanging off it’s collar and they tell you “THAT? Hah! That’s not a pit bull!’ And then they tell you it’s a Staffordshire terrier or some other name used to confuse people who are obviously looking at a pit bull. I guess if you read or operated a public service website like dogsbite.org you’d have encountered all the lying fans of this breed engage in to protect eh breed but since you don’t it came as a surprise to you. yeah, I remember back when I was surprised to see people in positions of trust lying to the public. On this thread, where we read that a 2 week old baby was killed and partially eaten by a pit, I find a post or two that say ‘dogs will be dogs’. Would you see that kind of denial if this article was about a golden retriever who, after being given dogfood, spontaneously killed and ate part of a baby? No.

I agree. I am inclined to believe the baby’s death was from a tragic accident and the dog was used as the means to cover up the accident. I hate even to think that but if the article is accurate some stuff is just not adding up.

You are full of it.

We owned a pit bull when I was a kid and they are no different from any other dog we ever owned.

My dad even bred beagles as hunting dogs so I think I know a little about dogs.

But according to a mother’s account, it took the pit bull 10 minutes or less to enter 15-day-old Darius Tillman’s bedroom, drag him out of his bassinet and maul him to death in February.

A Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety report obtained by the Kalamazoo Gazette under the state Freedom of Information Act shows that detectives sought charges of involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to animals against Darius’ 25-year-old mother, Mallory Wildig, but the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office declined to authorize charges.

Your sample size of 1 dog...is too...small.

Given that pit bulls killed more people each year than any other breed (2006-2008, 2009, 2010), pit bull owners who say “why I’ve owned 3 of them and they’ve all been sweet!” are statistically irrelevant. And that data is optimistic because too often, pit bull owners and supporters deny a pit bull is a pit bull once the animal maims or kills someone - the number is probably higher.

2010 statistics
http://www.dogsbite.org/bite-fatalities-2010.htm
33 U.S. fatal dog attacks occurred in 2010. Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 500 U.S. cities, pit bulls led these attacks accounting for 67% (22). Pit bulls make up approximately 5% of the total U.S. dog population.

2009 statistics
http://www.dogsbite.org/bite-fatalities-2009.htm
32 U.S. fatal dog attacks occurred in 2009. Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 500 U.S. cities, pit bulls led these attacks accounting for 44% (14). Pit bulls make up approximately 5% of the U.S. dog population.

2006 - 2008 same thing (http://www.dogsbite.org/newsroom-release-dog-bite-fatality-study-042209.htm)

As I’ve said, having debated pit bull owners/supporters for pages and pages of FR posts, I now realize that death toll is just fine with pit bull owners - they don’t want breed specific laws and they don’t want the banned breed - they want the rest of us to ‘get used to it’ while telling us we are ‘ignorant’ etc. The most they will do is attribute the carnage these animals cause to ‘irresponsible owners’. That’s it - that’s their action plan. Even on a thread where a baby is killed and eaten by the household pit - pit lovers opine ‘dogs will be dogs’ and some point to the owner’s judgement. These two ‘techniques’ (1. call that specific owner ‘irresponsible’ and 2. insist that ‘dogs will be dogs’) are the ‘action plan’ that pit lovers have adopted. Oh and sometimes they post cutsey pictures of pit bull puppies to ‘help’ the rest of us ‘accept’ yet another story of a pit bull killing a family member. These 3 techniques have done nothing to reduce the body count ant that’s just fine with pit bull owners. They object to any attempt by the public to use laws to reduce the death toll. I know pit lovers think I’m full of it. Guess what I think of pit bull lovers who want the rest of us to shut up and get used to dogs killing and eating babies?

Wow! You saved a life when you were that young

yup, it was in Suring Wisconsin and I was EXTREMELY angry at that dog. I am still in contact with the family and the "little girl", now a senior citizen, is alive and well and the mother of three kids (now grown). I reacted, probably stupidly, but I've never regretted it for a moment. I'm certain that adrenolin played a big part in my efforts, but as far as I'm concerned, the dog never stood a chance...I was bigger, heavier, and on its back withy a death hold around his neck......very scary but very fulfilling.....My parents were not pleased with my actions until they learned the results....

She had three children...who never would have been born if you hadn’t stopped that beast from killing her. Great story - thanks for sharing it with me! I needed to take time to look at the positives today.
