“Security researchers Pure Hacking recently announced that they discovered a zero-day vulnerability in Skype 5 for Mac. This vulnerability could allow a malicious user to send a specially crafted message to another Skype user, and then execute code an the latter Mac,” Intego reports.

Skype has “finally released an official update for Skype for Mac,” Intego reports. “This not only fixes the vulnerability we discussed, but also fixes some minor bugs, including a video freezing issue. You can update Skype by using the program’s built-in auto-updater. (Choose Skype > Check for Updates.)”

Not going to be real trusting of Skype if Microsoft takes it over. Reason?

Microsoft’s bad reputation for putting out worm/trojan/bug resistant software.

This has nothing to do with Microsoft.

Skype for Mac has always been terrible. Can't do conferencing, doesn't have many of the other features either, it doesn't have the userbase so they don't update it.

Between Skype’s security vulnerability and the Microsoft buyout, Apple has more incentive than ever to promote FaceTime. I don’t think they’re much interested in creating apps for Windows, Windows Phone or Android, but FaceTime uses open standards, and they could certainly nudge along some third-party developers to widen its appeal.

Yes, but SM is right to say that the fact that the fact that Skype was able to create the bug without being blocked from execution by OS X is the primary lesson.
I make no doubt that that has been topic 1 within Apple for the past week. Surely Skype 5 was running on the iPad? Wouldn't that imply that Skype 5 had even been vetted by Apple itself?

Skype for iOS is an entirely different animal than Skype 5 for Mac. Skype for iOS was rewritten to fit on a mobile platform from the ground up. It was curated.
