Facebook "Like" is Appearing on every page, what's up with that?

I just noticed this.

Why is the Facebook "Like" icon now appearing on every page I go to? Is FR now connected in some way to Facebook?

I’m sure he’ll be checking, he’s just tired of the whining. And justifiably so. You’re spouting pure paranoid BS. It’s just a like button, if you don’t like it disable java script, if you’re not going to disable java script stop bitching.

Jim,

Is it true you’re working on a whole new interface and if so do you have an estimated time until a public beta?

Don’t like facebook? Don’t click on the button.

LOL. Javascript is loaded and executed when the page is loaded whether you click on it or not.

That's how dynamic content works. You really ought to look into that a bit, boss.

Ohh. So it’s that way, huh?

A bidding war?

No Thanks. The last time I engaged in something like that I made a pledge to donate $50 to the FReepathon if Jim un-banned Laz.

He did. I paid. Laz is here and I’ll carry the guilt with me to my grave.

You don’t have to. If you hit FB from the machine you’re on now it leaves cookies behind that include your login, if you hit the Like button it will look for those cookies and use them. And then your FB identity will Like a story on FR and maybe even Share it.

I manage my javascript on a per-site basis, thanks.

It’s a tool, like anything else, I know how to use it.

How many of the little-old-ladies on FR have any idea how to turn js off?

It’s not hard to turn it off. There’s already instructions to put in an add-on for some browsers in this thread. And a Help button on every browser where they can search for “java script”. Of course since it’s highly unlikely that anything bad will come from this script there’s no reason for them, or anybody that isn’t being stupidly pointlessly paranoid, to turn it off. It’s just a like button. It is NOT doing anything to your machine or stealing your identity or anything else you’re imagining.

Well, it’s too late for you then, facebook already has your number. You’re doomed. By the way, the facebook like or share buttons are on thousands of web sites all over the Internet. Even those we link to. If you click on any link on the net, you’re risking being exposed to the dreaded facebook button (or any of the other big social networking sites). You’ll either have to leave java disabled on your browser or hang it up and go back to phone trees.

Give me a break! Turn the damn thing off on FR then, or simply go away if you can’t handle it!!

You're right. It's not doing anything on MY machine.

It is executing code only on peoples' machines who are not savvy enough to turn it off, and or install add-ons to the browser. lol.

It’s not doing anything to ANYBODY’S machine. Stop being such a paranoid freak. The LOL is all on you, this groundless, pointless paranoia makes you look like an idiot. Like JimRob said: give it a rest.

It is true, but it’s slow going and I do not have an ETA or a beta yet. It’s a conservative social networking site. But it’s a totally separate site on a separate URL on a different ISP. It will be available to registered FReepers in good standing ONLY but will be in addition to FR, not part of it. FR will remain the same. It’s planned to have networking accounts similar to facebook where the user can choose who has access to his page and which pages or groups he may wish to join. There will also be a way for users or groups of users to maintain their own collaborative sites on the network including public and or private forums. They’ll be able to administrate their own sites and control access to them. As it’s on a server of its own on a different provider, it’ll also serve as a backup site for FR.

Oh, yeah. And it uses javascript extensively and all new software technology so unfortunately, some of our uses aren’t going to like it.

Thanks for the info, it sounds great. Let me know if you need an experienced alpha/beta tester. I can find bugs fer ya if you need it.

I am so appreciative of all you work.

Thank you.

Thanks but I don’t hit “Like” on anything and I run Firefox with No Script.

Well then none of it matter for you. But if you DID hit Like on a story that’s how it would hook into your facebook account.
