I sympathize with the families of the Chilean miners who are currently being rescued, but I can't remember a Media event so covered since I was a 12 year old kid during the JFK assasination coverage.
Why is this event so covered?

Yes, because I was watching baseball while those shows were supposed to be originally on and wanted to watch when they reaired them later in the evening. I’m glad the miners were saved, but beyond that, it does very little for me. When I turn to cable news, I want a discussion and analysis of the issues, not a human interest story.

I find the story interesting. These men have been trapped underground for 69-70 days and we are complaining about nothing to watch on TV? Gotta love it!
Dozens of people trapped a half mile below the surface of the earth for weeks is news. Their rescue is news. Their reunions with their children are news.
For you not to understand that this is a huge news story shows a warped perspective. You're the one out-of-phase with human compassion and interest. That you didn't care whether these men lived or died is your own personal tragedy. It would suck to be you. Got it?
In a SHTF scenario what has been on the news tonight in the way of discussions by experts could be good knowledge to know.. Another night of Fred, Charlie, Bill, Sean, and whoever will be much the same as it has been the last two years. Just like a soap opera you miss nothing missing a day of talking heads.
Where I live in a SHTF scenario an abandoned mine or cave might be where I would head too for immediate safety. It's good to have some basic understanding of it. I have had training in dealing with monitoring explosive & deadly gasses in confined spaces and I still learned more tonight watching the rescue.
Survival in any emergency depends mostly on knowledge. Tonight was far more educational than another night of rehashed 1000 times over debates and opinions of the DC establishment beltway talking head panels.
I can watch the news and know where someone stands and check their voting records etc. I don't need a talking head to think for me.
It’s about as exciting as watching the cops chase OJ Simpson’s Bronco down the highway. I’ll turn the news shows back on when this is over.

Think about it — the Chileans seem to be in the midst of an enormous national success story; a tragedy turned into a national success. Compare that to the United States under Obama, who could find a way to screw up an iron ball. Everything our messiah touches turns to crap.

I’m happy for the Chileans if they all get rescued, which looks like it’s going to happen. Very rare that something good happens after a mine disaster.
