Former wife of Mark Hofmann to tell her side of the story

SALT LAKE CITY -- The former wife of Mark Hofmann, convicted forger, bomber and murderer, will tell her side of the story Wednesday night on the Investigation Discovery Network.

Dorie Olds, of Salt Lake City, who divorced Hofmann in the late 1980s, will be featured on "Who the (Bleep) Did I Marry?," which will air at 8 p.m. Wednesday on Investigation Discovery Network, seen by local cable subscribers on Channel 271.

Olds, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, reportedly considered herself a devout member of the faith and assumed her returned-missionary groom was as well.

Hofmann collected historic documents, and soon claimed to have found several pieces that drew into question the origins of the church.

Nearly six years after his first "discovery," a few people began to suspect that Hofmann had forged the controversial documents.

Hofmann made bombs, intended to attack those who suspected him.

Two people died in two explosions, and Hofmann was injured in a third blast in his car.

He is now serving a life sentence in Utah State Prison.

This has always intrigued me. To think that he could actually trick the experts, especially a prophet in the Mormon church is just beyond belief.

I am familiar with numerous experts regarding fine art and the ways that one can detect forgeries. This Hoffman thing should never have gotten to first base. My only conclusion was that the Mormons wanted to cover-up any and all possibilities just in case they (the documents) might be real.Salamander Letter

Wasn't there a detailed TV documentary about Hoffman and his scam aired some years ago? I remember watching it in fascination.

Hoffman was brilliant in his forgeries and game plan. So brilliant that I suspect he was always hovering on the brink of some form of madness.

Perhaps the upcoming program will shed some light from the ex-wife's perspective. I'll watch with interest.

If folks can lay aside the distracting religious infighting, the tale of Hoffman is fascinating indeed.

My reason for posting has to do with the business of forgery and trickery and the fact that the very elect can be deceived due to their greed and sometimes their desperate wishes to make something real that is not.

As a fine art dealer, I see this all the time. When values escalate, the tricksters come out of the woodwork. For instance, in the world of fine art, I can point to several fake pieces of art being offered on eBay every day.

I agree with what you posit as your reason for posting. That's why I mentioned I hoped this thread wouldn't turn into a debate on Mormanism. Duping and being duped cuts across all lines. This has been true since the beginning of time.

Hoffman's scam was complex and riveting in its execution. It'll be worth watching the interview with his former wife on Wednesday.

The series "American Greed" running on CNBC for, lo, these many months, is also fascinating. It's produced by Bill Kurtis which means it's high quality and well-done. It focuses on corporate and white collar crimes, including insurance fraud, embezzlements, art theft, ponzi schemes, credit card and medical frauds, bank robbery, money laundering, identity theft and related murders....all the skin games you love to touch, LOL.

It's an eye-opening series.

It seems you are pretty good at detecting "fakes" of all kinds. There are tricksters posing as "oh, so good consevatives" here on FR too.

Thanks for posting the thread.

Hofmann has always been of interest to me. Back in the day we had partners in the business whose gallery was on South Main Street. At the time, they were next door to one of the rare documents dealers including Hofmann.

I read with great interest Lindsay’s book and had met or was acquainted with a few of the players.

In San Francisco there was an art dealer named Mark Hoffman. We had great fun discussing the irony of names over a dry martini. Hoffman was a very honest dealer however.

BTW, all the really strong “art dealers” are conservative business people.

I don’t think it is very difficult to figure out why Hoffman was so successful. All of the experts believed his documents were genuine.

As for the Prophet thing ... you seem to believe that Prophets are perfect. Adam wasn’t, Moses wasn’t ... nor were James or Paul. Why should a modern Prophet be any better than these?

I was reading "The Mormon Murders" on a plane trip a few years ago. As I was going to my seat, a man in the row behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Excuse me. I'm IN that book...!" Turned out he was the forensic document analyst who did all the tests. I was impressed.

the whole point of the book was the quick action of the Mormon elders to buy up anything that Hofmann produced, especially since some of it was quite negative about the beginnings of Mormonism....

that is the big reveal of the book...

Hofmann was nothing more than an opportunist and a sociopath....he passed a lie dectector test...

I guess this is what my own Catholic church did in the face of negative findings.....try to buy off people to keep quiet instead of facing things head on and ending them...
