Coca-Cola may have discontinued Vanilla Diet Coke, but a Germantown woman arrested Thursday apparently just couldn't get enough.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a call about a woman suspiciously slumped over the steering wheel in a white car parked in front of Arlington Middle School. Kelly Moss, 48, was in the driver's seat of the vehicle, partially parked on the school's driveway and the sidewalk, officers said.
According to an affidavit, Moss's speech was slurred and fragmented and she was unable to stand or walk without assistance. She did not comply with field sobriety and blood-alcohol tests.
An officer noticed partially empty bottles of vanilla extract, labeled as 35 percent alcohol by volume, and Diet Coke in the front seat, and they said they smelled a strong vanilla odor on the woman's breath. A grocery receipt found in the vehicle listed two 8-ounce bottles of vanilla extract, purchased Wednesday.
Moss is charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants and refusing to submit to a blood-alcohol test. This is her third DUI arrest, records show, and she was being held on $4,000 bond pending a hearing today.
What is vanilla, like 70 proof?
Back during my drinking days, I actually thought about doing something like that...
Not the driving part, mind...
I believe 35% equates to 70 proof.
Pretty nasty way to tag one on, though.
I’m a drunk(recovering). Would never drink vanilla. Can’t stand the smell of it.
By itself it’s pretti nasti (liek Moose Bites). It’s a flavoring, not a beverage. On top of Co-Cola might not be horrible. Other similar flavoring extracts high in alcohol are anise, almond, and I’m pretty sure I saw maple once.
Good job staying on the wagon. I quit because it was an expensive hobby.
Hmmm, I frequently shop in the baking aisle. The largest bottle of McCormicks real vanilla extract [that I've seen] is 4 oz. It's not cheap. Must have been the larger bottles of imitation vanilla extract. I always wondered who bought that stuff!
Real vanilla extract isn’t cheap either. She would’ve been better off buying vanilla flavored vodka.
Imitation vanilla doesn’t have alcohol. I knew a woman who baked “anniversary” cakes for AA and the organization for addicts. She couldn’t use real vanilla.
or 151.
Watson’s sells large bottles of real vanilla extract. I’ve seen them sold in 8 and 12 ounce bottles. Also, Sam’s Club sells large bottles of the real stuff too.
Wow, I’ve never seen that. How much do people bake? Yikes, in some places folks take their vanilla seriously (or they use it for off-label purposes, heh). If she needed the real thing I suppose a cheaper bottle of something else (e.g. vanilla vodka) would never do. :)
You want nasty? Back in the 70's in Navy boot camp we had read that the old Colgate 100 mouthwash was called that because it was 100 proof. We all picked up a bottle at the Navy Exchange and had a party mixing it with Mr. Pibb. It definitely had some alcohol in it but a sicker bunch of sailors you never saw.
I make my own vanilla- 6 to 10 vanilla beans chopped up in a litre of vodka, let steep 4 weeks, then top up as needed with more vodka. I usually top up when the bottle’s half empty and replace the beans after a year or so.
I just checked my bottle of real vanilla extract. It is a pint and I purchased it at a Sam’s Club. As I recall it wasn’t that expensive.
When I bake I don’t use the imitation stuff and I purchased this large a bottle because at one time I was baking many dozens of cookies along with several loaves of bread every month.
I drank cooking sherry/wine among other things when I drank. Sad case this woman. I hope she gets help ASAP.
That’s some pretty pricey boozing. Vanilla extract is at least a buck an ounce in those little bottles, and I wouldn’t be surprised to be told it’s more like two. You can get the little airline-size bottles at most second-tier neighborhood liquor stores for a buck.
If you have a Latin Foods section in your store, you might be able to get natural vanilla flavoring from Mexico in large bottles. I had a 16 oz jar that I used for a couple of years after we moved from Texas.
But if you’re just buying it to drink (ugh!) artificial has just as much alcohol, or more.
