Pittsburghers Park Cars, Bike To Work Instead

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Many Pittsburghers joined people all around the nation today by keeping their cars parked and taking their bicycles to work instead.

It's all a part of National Bike to Work Day.

"I bike from Friendship, and then I just usually head down Liberty, cross over to Penn Ave. when I get down into the Strip and I work at the Regional Enterprise Tower," said Jake Baechle, a bicyclist.

Baechle says biking is about more then just saving on gas money.

"It saves a lot of money, saves on gas, and it's good for the environment and it's a good time to get exercise in," he said. "It's just the way we need to start moving as a country as a whole and I'd like to see Pittsburgh leading the way in that."

He isn't alone in his opinion on the benefits of biking.

Baechle was joined by plenty of other bikers downtown today as they celebrated by getting their bikes maintained and spreading the word.

"Hopefully, it spurs them into commuting more days than just one a year, and hopefully they'll talk to their friends and colleagues at their places of business and just inspire other people to get out of their cars and experience Pittsburgh by bicycle," said Scott Bricker, of Bike Pittsburgh.

Everyday, 140,000 people come into downtown Pittsburgh for their jobs, and 3,000 of them ride their bikes.

That number could rise with a $20 a month federal tax credit to reimburse bicyclists for things such as bike repairs, storage and helmets.

Bike Pittsburgh is also encouraging companies to be more bike-friendly by providing bike racks, showers and lockers and allow employees to bring their bikes inside for safekeeping.

I'm having a tough time picturing 3000 bicycles in downtown Pittsburgh.
Maybe they're including Oakland in that estimate.

Engaging in symbolism on Bike day can be fun but what about the other 364 days?

Oh shut up, you stupid totalitarian collectivist. You can't just ride your damn bike, can you? You got to push for laws requiring everyone to do so, and the destruction of all technology for the last 300 years at the point of a gun, back up by concentration camps and death panels, just so you can say the right things to try to get laid picking up some stupid women at a Starbucks.

Liberals - if they didn't exist, no one would ever believe they could.

Get on a kids toy and go play in traffic.

Once a year they have a bicycle ride here in Huntsville, Texas.
The fools do not obey any laws.
I believe they all come from socialist Houston.

Last year I did my part for to save the environment.

To prevent the spread of global warming, I opened up all the windows in my house and turned down the central air conditioning in my home to 55 degrees in an attempt to cool the outside. Made me feel so good about myself....

Wait till a few folks start claiming disability because it gets attached to a “program”.

Bike to work unless, of course, you have to punch a time clock at a certain time, or carry tools, or drive from jobsite to jobsite. What elitist, feel-good nonsense.

Plus, if they really wanted to do this, they should have waited for one of those nice, snowy days I remember as a kid growing up in some of the towns cut into the hillsides of the river banks. Drive your bike down a street that is at a 45 degree + angle that is covered in ice.

You could do that in Atlanta too - if you are suicidal.

Yeah, I suspect as much. Anything within a five mile radius of the point is "Downtown."

Guess what? Biking increases in nice weather. So does driving. Thousands of Pittsburgh who were content to huddle in their homes during the February snowfall were out on the streets today. Not just bicyclists.

Average commute here is about 30 miles and muggy hot rainy days in summer. Yeah. Have fun, but stay out of the way of those who show up to work clean and ready.

The only way I would possibly consider biking to work is if it were a relatively close distance, I didn’t have to drive my car for work, AND there was a shower waiting there for me to use.

One thing’s for sure - I sure as HELL wouldn’t do it to “save the planet”...and I wouldn’t try to mandate that everyone do the same.

Why do they always choose warm weather for these demonstrations. If these dopes really wanted to prove a point, do this around Christmas with snow and ice and cold. Go shopping with your ten speed and bring home your gifts and goose on your handlebars. Phony BS.

With all the distracted drivers on cell phones, combing their hair, reading a book and texting?...No thanks, I'll stay in my car.
