ATLANTA President Barack Obama is promising parents and their kids that with his administration's help they will have better teachers in improved schools so U.S. students can make up for academic ground lost against youngsters in other countries.
A plan to overhaul the 2002 education law championed by President George W. Bush was unveiled by the Obama administration Saturday in hopes of replacing a system that in the last decade has tagged more than a third of schools as failing and created a hodgepodge of sometimes weak academic standards among states.
"Unless we take action unless we step up there are countless children who will never realize their full talent and potential," Obama said during a video address on Saturday. "I don't accept that future for them. And I don't accept that future for the United States of America."
In the proposed dismantling of the No Child Left Behind law, education officials would move away from punishing schools that don't meet benchmarks and focus on rewarding schools for progress, particularly with poor and minority students. Obama intends to send a rewrite to Congress on Monday of the law.

Just mandate that every kid no matter how stupid gets to College. Yea, that’ll work out great. hahaha
Re: “Obama promise: Focus on getting kids to college”
Correction: Obama promise: Focus on getting kids to [indoctrination centers]
Hey, how about you focus on jobs, Obumbles? Would that be asking too much?
1. Will require massive tax dollar subsidies for underachievers to go to college.
2. Will require UNION subsidies to create programs (that don’t work)
3. Will require universities to lower standards or face cut in Federal funding
End results. Billions of dollars and flooding our universities with students that don’t belong there.
Translation: another nanny-state program so single parents can dump their brood off on Union workers for huge costs!
Can every kid get in to Harvard? No. But, every kid can get into a State Univeristy. It may take some time and some Community College, but he can get into the Big State University.
Once there, the first 2 years are Graduate Assistants teaching from a textbook. No one fails IF he just shows up for class.
In the last 2 years, no tenured professor is going to fail you if you came to every class and attempted to participate.
Now, you have a bright, shiny degree. You might not know anything and you may have no work ethic, but you have a degree.
Then you show up at work and expect the corner office on day 1.
Basket Weavers Amalgamated!
At least half the kids in college now are wasting their time and their parents’ money.
Under Obama, they can continue to waste their time, and EVERYBODY’s money.
yep
Every person deserves what they earn, its not the job of the govt to determine their merit.
I read this as they will be eliminating any teaching standards so that everyone passes.
He just keeps handing out money.
“And, for the first time in 45 years, the White House is proposing a $4 billion increase in federal education spending...”
Translation: College will soon be the new high school.
If an idea can be a pet peeve, then this whole idea that everyone should go to college is mine. It is not a solution, but part of the problem. Grrrr.
But he cuts NASA which might employ people with a college degree.
And they will need extra money to pay for all the abortions with all this extra coed living.
Yes, get them to college. Even the dopers and academic slugs like Obama was. Then I suppose we will give them faux degrees, too, and only those who go to graduate school will be expected to actually read, calculate, and think. You can see this coming.
This is so stupid.
How would Obama know about what it costs to go to college? Why would he know anything about student loans? As far as I know, he was able to go to one of the most expensive schools in the country without any scholarship or financial aid or loans.
