Good morning gardeners! March rains have temporarily halted progress in my garden and cleaning up the property. Hopefully I will get a few days of dry and warmer weather this coming week. At least I dont have to have my States Legislature pass a Bill that says I can have a garden on my property! There is a link to this story in my second post below.

Ping to the Weekly Gardening Ping List.
I hope all of you will stop by.
This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.
If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.
The community garden officially opens next Saturday and I can’t wait. Due to an office move, I am behind in my seed starting, but the NOAA forecast is for a cooler and wetter March and April so I feel okay starting late on cool veges.
I also will buy some transplants for insurance and treat the seeds as my succession to them.
Mornig. We are actually have decent weather and getting things done here. WOrked outside for four hours yesterday, before the rain settled in.
Am going to try to do some more today.
Have a small patch of peas, turnips and lettuce in the garden and several trays started in the sun room. If the weather keeps up this week will move em to the greenhouse.
Garden club is making containers this weekend to be filled with plants for the plant sale.
The weather in STL has be gorgeous the last few days and I’m getting antsy!! Our frost date is April 15 so I’m just dreaming at this point :)
How do y’all make you containers?
I still have plenty of time to get everything ready. Last year I planted on April 10 and every thing went well.
This weekend is my big weekend. Get the amendments into the vegetable gardens and establish a new flower garden that my daughter wants to plant.
Never had too much luck with flowers, myself. If I can’t eat them, why bother? But if my daughter wants to do the work, who am I to begrudge her a patch of ground?
That's what my neighbor's garden is for! One of the advantages of living on a fifth of a acre...
Started cool weather crops today, so I can move then to the greenhouse in a few weeks, leaving room to start all of the warmer weather crops.
Found a stalk of brussells sprouts in the garden yesterday; still growing! Had some for dinner last night and will have the rest for lunch today. What a treat!
The gals at work bought me bags of Fertilome and all the seeds they want me to start for them. Tomatoes and peppers, mostly and the romanesco-type of cauliflower.
The birdsong this morning was deafening, but OH SO WELCOME!
Saw my first Robin today; heard the Sandhill Cranes on Sunday, but haven’t seen them yet...though it’s been so FOGGY you can hardly see your hand in front of your face.
I have two male Cardinals that are singing for mates and harrassing each other endlessly. Redwinged Blackbirds are back, too.
AND - the hens are out! They are soooooo happy to be out in their yard; they’re just chattering away.
Lots of dog poop to clean up in the yard. I’m waiting for my son to irritate me over some minor infraction so I can hand him a shovel and a bucket, LOL!
True, dat. But, I’m glad you’re indulging your daughter. :)
maters and seedlings have been outside for a couple of days...we had a lot of rain yesterday and may have drowned the seedlings...:( but the maters are looking like they really love it! when I have a few spare minutes of daylight, I’d like to plant them in the garden. LAst weekend I removed a clump of palmettos near the garden and sheared off part of another larger clump. I was pooped after all of that...
It’s supposed to rain heavily all weekend here in SE PA ... just what we need with the soil all saturated from 3 feet of melted snow. Looks like it might be another delayed spring planting this year.
I may till my second garden today. My tomato plants are doing great.
Spinach and lettuce need picking again. Onions are looking good too.
That is so cool, because they spend their winters around my farm. Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge
Temp got up to 62 here on the mudflats of Humboldt Bay yesterday and the digging and dividing of the Dahlias continued with 23 down and 17 to go. One clump must have weighed 25# and it took the 2 of us to dig and lift it out of the hole. It is raining here now with snow just to the east in the hills so that ends the digging but I’m hoping to spread some compost and steer manure on the bed before we replant.
First Wife planted a row of radish seed yesterday that she received as a gift with a flower seed order. I must remember to put out slug bait as soon as the rain stops. We used to do 2 large vegetable gardens in our productive years and FW canned everything possible...
