In some of those cases, the parents will actually injure the child (mess with tubing, whatever) to keep the child hospitalized.

symptoms remind me of my second wife. always getting some sort of "virus" that would cause her to be sick for weeks/ months at a time whenever there was something she didn't want to do, and of course it couldn't be treated. then suddenly she'd be fine again for no discernable reason.
