The ice circle measures 2.5miles across and was spotted on Lake Baikal, the largest freshwater lake in the world
The two mysterious circles were pictured by astronauts aboard the International Space Station

Interesting. I’m suspecting some kind of current. I’ve got a book of Michigan mysteries that shows the mysterious ice circles on a lake near my home.

That is one of the Russkies nuclear torpedoes that they were testing during the cold war. Many of the torpedoes malfunctioned and went to the bottom where they were unrecoverable. The heat generated by the plutonium causes a change in the water temperature at the surface. These circles will appear for 250 million years and then suddenly disappear. Not to worry though, we have a trillion plus dollar debt.

Ice circles are not that uncommon. You just have to be there with a camera at the right time. Now that camera phones are so common, there are many of these being photographed.

Unusual that the photo carries a NASA “copyright”. I thought that all images from our government were copyright free. Same with government publications (many people published the Warren Report of the JFK assassination, for example).
You can contact the Library of Congress for thousands of reproducable images from other sources we funded as well.
You may have to give credit, but it isn’t a copyright.

JPB, thanks, and I think you posted a topic about ice circles in American streams and rivers, a while back?
