LIVE Influenza Thread 04-26-09
Twitter, and Various Others ^ | 4-26-09 | FReepers

Posted on 04/26/2009 8:41:48 AM PDT by BagCamAddict

Please keep chat and one-liners to a minimum. This thread is intended to be a one-stop-shop for all of todays NEWS and info related to the Mexican Swine Flu.

To make it faster for everyone to catch up on the actual NEWS, PLEASE PLEASE minimize chat, jokes, bashing the administration, soapboxes, and so forth. These live threads can become useless monster threads if everyone throws in their one-liners, and we all have 'em! So let's try to keep this thread useful for the latest NEWS.

Thank you all in advance.

I agree we shouldn’t be in a panic at this stage. The details are still emerging and evolving. But we should be informed so that we can make appropriate decisions for ourselves and our families.

Facts are: We don’t yet know whether it is “weaker” or “stronger” outside of Mexico because there haven’t been enough cases outside of Mexico to make that assessment.

With a Mexican mortality rate ranging from 2% to 7% (depending on what numbers you use/believe), we would need at least 14 confirmed cases in the US and 1 death to demonstrate a 7% death rate here, and up to 50 confirmed cases with 1 death to demonstrate a 2% death rate here. So given the info we have at this moment, it is not a valid statement to say whether or not this Flu is weaker outside of Mexico.

Also, because we theoretically have better health care, our mortality rate should be lower. But that doesn’t mean the virus is any stronger or weaker, it just means we can combat the complications more effectively.

Give it time to infect several few hundred people in the US and then we will know more about the US mortality rate. And meanwhile, we all need to take standard flu-season precautions so we don’t become part of the data set.

Just saw a few minutes of the press conference.

Napolitano, "Dept. of state has not yet issued travel warnings for Mexico".

No surprise there,Hillary would have to take a stand. Hard to triangulate a travel warning either you can go there or you are warned not to!

Incompetence from top to bottom in this govt.

British papers reporting that US recommends face masks for all Americans. True or not?

Janet said it at least three times.

Salesmanship 101 ... tell 'em, sell 'em, sell 'em what you sold 'em.

“We need to keep our eye on the ball and not get diverted IMHO.”

Absolutely. That is what we need to do.

But as we both can see by these threads on FR, there are too many folks in a panic. All they do is get in the way of the real issues while they are running around in a stupor.

They need to lock their doors and windows and hide under their beds, and again, get out of the way.

Sorry for sounding rough, but I am fed up with these pantywaist FR folks.

CDC says hand sanitizers and disinfectants are helpful. I went out and both tons last night for home and office.

Lysol “Healthy Touch” is turning out to be the best. It’s foam based and also has a moisturizer. Very good. About $5.00.

Yes, take our eye off of:

1. Pakistan
2. Feinstein and her husband’s criminal behaviour
3. Dem involvement in Fannie/Freddie debacle

(feel free to add to the list)

I can’t find anything on it - but is sounds too much for this early.

I suspect it is false.

I have the same reaction to Janet. I simply CANNOT believe anything she says. Even if it turned out to be true.

I just saw a few minutes of the presser also in which a reporter had asked if 0 had recieved any treatment/vaccine since it was just recommended that joe q citizen do nothing other than frequent handwashing. The question regarding precautions for 0 was COMPLETELY ignored—just a reiteration on what the “little” people should do. Personally, I’m not particularly concerned about this flu, but I know a lot of people are. I AM concerned, however, that 0 will use this as either another distraction or an excuse to start “quarantine camps” to effectively dismiss any of his detractors.
