Susan Boyle and Sarah Palin--an odd couple
Examiner ^ | April 18, | Robert V. Thompson

Posted on 04/20/2009 5:10:05 PM PDT by JoeProBono

What if Sarah Palin looked like Susan Boyle? All things being equal, if Susan was an American woman with views identical to Sarah Palin, is there a snowball's chance in hell that John McCain would have asked her to be his running mate?

Fat chance.

The interesting thing about the Susan Boyle phenomenon is how it has saturated the media. Her picture was on the home page of CNN and she sang her song on the morning show. There was an article about her in the New York Times, not to mention prominent placement in just about every other major news outlet.

This story seems to have struck a cultural nerve.

Sarah Boyle, unlike Sarah Palin, is not a pretty face.

In my previous article, Susan Boyle and Inner Beauty, I talked about how we are suckers for the surface appearance at the cost of being blind to the beauty of a person that lives within.

One of my commentators thoroughly chastised me: " fashion equivalent of a beast?" that remark puts you right there with all the people you're chastising. this woman is a perfectly ordinary plump middle-aged looking woman, typical of most. thank God for that voice! without that, her years of faithful care of her aged parents, her indomitable spirit and her warm heart would indeed have continued to go unrespected and unnoticed. by you as well, Bob.

Fair enough.

When I wrote the previous piece I wasn't aware of Susan's remarkable qualities as a human being. But that wasn't my point. We are quick--too quick--to draw conclusions based on physical appearance.

I am just as guilty as anyone.

I admit that pretty people get my attention in a way that perfectly-plump middle-aged looking women normally doesn't. That said, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one prone to ogling cute people.

Which brings me to Sarah Palin.

During the presidential campaign Sarah Palin's good looks were often a source of scorn. Those who did not ogle her political ideology often discounted her as a pretty face with a "vacant skull". I don't agree that Sarah Palin has a vacant skull but neither do I think she is thoughtul or particularly open. To tell the truth, I don't see her political ideology as particularly attractive. Easy on the eyes but like fingernails on the chalkboard when it comes to the mind and the heart.

From what I have seen thus far, when it comes to inner beauty, I'll take Susan Boyle over Sarah Palin in a heartbeat.

You can't tell the contents by the container. This is the lesson we are being taught time and time again. Sarah Palin taught us that just because it's pretty doesn't mean it's appealing. And now, Susan Boyle teaches us that just because it's not pretty doesn't mean there's no beauty to be seen.

Which of the two is prettiest?

I guess it depends on your definition of beauty.

I just hope Susan Boyle doesn't get a makeover. She doesn't need one.

Don’t know about you, but I admire Sarah Palin for her mind, not her looks. Also for her vehement defense of the right to life of unborn babies. And her many, many fine moral and personal qualities.

I’d support Sarah if she were bald and fat. It’s what comes out of her mouth that I admire..she has inner beauty and a strength that I greatly admire

Can leftwing nuts write any story that doesn’t find someway to bash Sarah Palin. It is not Sarah Palin who has the ugly personality that spews vile. The MSM should examine their own inner beauty, which ain’t pretty.

Robert V. Thompson is a damn idiot. God made ‘em both what He desired and both share a great light with the gifts they have been given. ‘Nuff said. Why even go here? It is about as relevant as: What if Robert V. Thompson’s face looked like my ass. DIscuss. LOL.

Palin walks the walk unlike most politicians who talk and talk and talk while stealing all they can carry.

I think Palin is beautiful both inside and out and I judge that based on her actions as a woman of principle. Ms. Boyle appears to be a hoot and though not a physical beauty she is a beautiful singer and appears to have a great personality and is certainly is not entirely unattractive. She is just a normal older woman in physical appearance and though our culture has become increasingly shallow I don’t see her as particularly ugly or anything like that. She isn’t someone I’d want to view as a pinup but I hardly think that being of pinup quality should not be the primary consideration in life though Sarah Palin was attacked exactly because she was attractive while Ms. Boyle is being lifted up because she is “not”. I don’t know what she thinks or how she thinks but her courage deserves admiration.

Another puff opinion piece without any supporting logic to support his opinion by a liberal who thinks up is down and left is right.

So do I and in light of comments coming from our own party — or people who “claim” to be Republicans now days — Sarah is much braver than people are giving her credit for... I’m referring to Meg Whitmans speech and the crud coming out of Megan McCain .... Not that Megan matters, but both these women have John McCain’s ear and I think he was feeding us a line of bull during the election, which is why he was so weak in defending Palin, he doesn’t understand her and likewise he doesn’t understand us... and I am thinking Newt is no difference... time to separate the wheat from the chafe IMHO.

Robt V Thompson uses Boyle’s recent fame just to take a stab at Palin.

“time to separate the wheat from the chafe IMHO.”

Amen! I am so sick of RINOs and other so-called conservatives who are only out there to beat their own drum and advance their own personal careers!

This Thompson person must have a submarginal IQ, as there is no logic in this piece, nor is there any evidence to back up his spurious claims.

The analogy is ludicrous.

And now, Susan Boyle teaches us that just because it's not pretty doesn't mean there's no beauty to be seen.

That someone like Susan Boyle - not young, not show business, not "made over" - had the balls to get on a show like Britain's Got Talent and sing for critical judges and a huge audience of strangers make her, frankly, awesome in my book.

That said, this article has nothing to do with what this author thinks about what constitutes beauty.

He's merely using Susan Boyle to construct a hit piece on Sarah Palin.

If Palin and her brood were ugly no one would give a damn about them.

Yes. I agree. Let's rephrase it.

What if JOE BIDEN looked like Susan Boyle? All things being equal, if Susan was an American MAN with views identical to JOE BIDEN, is there a snowball's chance in hell that Barack Obama would have asked her to be his running mate?

Fat chance.

This just shows the idiocy as well as irrelevancy.

This Susan Boyle story just for me demonsrates how phony people can be. That crowd was prepared to laugh and ridicule Susan Boyle. They were going to mock the droopy looking person singing badly and have a good laugh. Then she sings well and those same people who were going to laugh at her cheer for her and they want to act like it wasn't them but rather it was other people who were shallow and superficial.

As for the Sarah Palin angle. It's clearly a political tactic to mock especially women on physical appearance. Remember Linda Tripp. If the woman is unattractive then they mock that person for being unattractive and if the woman is attractive they mock her for being a bimbo or a barbie doll. Which side does this more. Who knows. My anger is the way the left on one hand embraces open sexuality or even pornography and homosexuality but then when a conservative woman comes along such as Palin or Laura Ingraham they use these tactics to de-womanize them whether it be rap songs about Palin or the porn star that supposedly looked like Palin or the playing of the gay card against republicans who might still be single.

Yes, mam! Same as we can’t stand Mrs Clinton, and libs do. You can see into the hearts of people unless you are vulnerable, and Sarah and Susan are both good people. Sarah should invite Susan to sing our National Anthem at a hockey game!

I find Sarah highly intelligent, principled, and a breath of fresh air.

I dont doubt that her good looks caused her some problems. But I believe that Michael Barone hit the nail on the head when he said what really fries liberals about Sarah was that she didnt just talk the talk about her view on abortion. They cant stand that she had the courage to have Trig. It galls them to no end because they never would have made that sacrifice.

As for Susan Boyle, I have a feeling we will soon see a makeover that will knock everyone’s socks off.
